Wild Storm Legionnaire Slot Review
We are fans of Yggdrasil, and it came as a massive surprise to us that the last we reviewed a game from this Swedish provider was in August 2023. A year ago. Hence, we decided to rectify this injustice and set out to see what this studio has unleashed on the online gambling realm lately. Doing our research, we noticed that it has been churning out around two spinners per month, but what caught our eye was that it recently put out a title from its partner Boomerang Games named Wild Storm Legionnaire Lightning Chase.
Boomerang Games is a developer that was founded in 2018, has around thirty products in its arsenal, and supplies content through the Yggdrasil’s’ YGG Masters program thanks to an agreement with ReelPlay. It has five Lightning Chase slots, and this one showed up on the Web on the eighteenth of July 2024. From what we can tell, it only did respectable numbers in the first two weeks following its debut in Scandinavia, the UK, South Africa, Spain, and Belgium, ranking in the top five hundred most-played spinners in these markets. Elsewhere, it did not do so hot. Still, Yggdrasil’s senior product manager, Zoee Bird, claims that this is an exceptional online slot that delivers high-octane action, and he expects that it will perform excellently in key regions worldwide. While he somewhat missed the mark on the latter claim, we put his first one to the test in our review below.
Theme & Design
The term legionnaire gets used to describe a member of a legion. For the most part, this term refers to those who participate in the French Foreign Legion. There is a Jean Claude Van Damme film with this name, where his character gets forced to join this military legion. Nonetheless, this slot seems to reference the Roman legion, even though its main legionnaire symbol looks eerily similar to a Spartan from the movie/comic book 300. The background gorge in this game also seems like a subtle nod to the Zack Snyder film – 300.
Audio-visually, we would call the presentation here average at best. The graphics have a modern comic book vibe and are not that bad, even though the overall presentation feels still here, with some clunky animations. In our opinion, the audio side of things here is the more disappointing part of this slot, as it features repetitive music, which is not too bad. But it gets paired with annoying sound effects, and the animations and fonts when you get your respins in Wild Storm Legionnaire have a very amateurish look to them. Things improve in the bonus feature, with some background soldiers and fire animations, but you also get some very out-of-place sound effects and tunes. That made things super weird for us in our session. So, we must call the presentation in Wild Storm Legionnaire somewhat confusing at times.
You will find the spin button and the increase and decrease bet size icons right of the reel grid, with your balance and wager size info presented at the bottom of your screen overlaid on a black bar.
Specs & Gameplay
Spec-wise, Wild Storm Legionnaire is an Internet spinner with a medium-high variance with a hit frequency of 37.36 that comes in three RTP variants. The first is a return-to-player percentage of 90.5%, the second is an RTP setting of 94%, and the third is 96%. Of course, the last one is the RTP you will most see this game boast, and these winning odds, with a max exposure of x1,840 attached, can lead to a top payout of €230,000. We should note that some review sites cite an RTP of 95% for this game, but according to Yggdrasil’s official website, that is incorrect.
The wagering range in this slot will begin at $0.25 and end at $125 per spin. The gaming action here plays out on a 3-4-3-4-3 layout with four hundred and thirty-two paylines.
You get rewarded in Wild Storm Legionnaire when you form three to five matching symbol combos on a payline, with the highest one getting paid out in instances when multiple ones form. Note that each token can get used only once per winning combo in this game, and the low-pay banners yield prizes of up to x2.4 for five-of-a-kind combinations, while the item symbols generate wins of up to x5 when five identical ones land. The legionnaire is the top premium in this slot, and he produces prizes of x10 when he hits five times on a spin.
The female warrior is the wild here, substituting tokens and collecting them. Crossed swords are the scatter.
Bonus Features
There are essentially only two bonus features in this interactive gaming product. The first is a free spin round, which you can enter through three or more scatters hitting in view. That awards eight on-the-house reel rotations. The scatters are present on all reels and not only trigger this mode but pay x1, x5, or x10 when three, four, or five of them appear, respectively. During this round, a Collect symbol gets locked in the middle third reel, and a wild reel can cover all of the second and fourth reels. You cannot retrigger this round.
The Hold & Respin feature gets activated through at least one Collect symbol along with at least two coins. You begin your gaming fun here with three respins, where only coins and collect tokens can land. Each coin gets valued between x0.4 and x25, and these get held in place while all other positions respin. The counter resets to three whenever a coin or collect symbol lands. Coin prizes get awarded when a collect symbol is present. If all positions get filled, a win of x32.52 gets paid out, and the mode concludes.
GOSU Verdict
We are not fans of this game. It has a poor presentation, ungenerous bonus features, and generally looks and plays weird. We hoped to see a more inspirative effort from Boomerang Games, but that is not what we got here. Thus, Wild Storm Legionnaire is a definitive pass from us.
