Age of Asgard Slot Review
No one can argue the quality of Yggdrasil’s titles, and no one can deny that they like to reach into the Norse mythology well often. It should come as no surprise since they named their company after an Old Norse word that has several interpretations, including Odin’s horse. Thus, they do not shy away from their roots. Released in October of 2019, Age of Asgard is not amongst the company’s most popular offerings, but it’s a more than decent showing that utilizes a unique dual-grid setup.
Theme & Design
Ever since the release of the first Thor movie in 2011, Norse legends came back in style and now serve as a frequent inspiration for developers. Age of Asgard borrows visual cues from the Marvel movies, especially when it comes to the costume design department. It also fuzes this imagery with World of Warcraft-inspired aesthetics, as well as some historically faithful representations of the time, spiced with a fantasy element.
A snow-covered mountain village serves as the setting for the game. You can see houses and stone statues in the background and mountainous terrain behind them. In the foreground, the dual reel-grid setup spins inside a wooden monument held together by decorative iron braces. It has wood-carved soldiers on each side, as well as fire urns next to them. The soundtrack is quite fitting and compliments the action nicely.
The spin, max bet, and auto-spin buttons are in the middle of the screen. The win and balance info are on the right. On your left, you can find the bet adjuster as well as a plus symbol. If you click the latter, it will extend and provide you with the mute, settings, info, and about options.
Specs & Gameplay
Age of Asgard utilizes two reel-grids on top of each other. Each set has five reels, three rows, and twenty paylines. The top one represents the characters that fight on the side of good, while the lower grid is where the monsters reside. The bet sizes here range from $0.2 to $200 per spin. The RTP is an average of 96.20%, the variance is medium, and the max exposure is x2,444.
Each reel set has its pay symbols, four low-paying ones, and three high-paying ones, which are three symbols tall. The low-paying symbols on both grids are rune card suits in different colors, and they pay x1 to x2 for five on a line. The high-paying symbols on the good reels are female warriors, while on the bad reels, they are monsters. Both sets of high-paying symbols pay from x4.5 to x6 for five of a kind.
A symbol that has the words Free Spins on it is the Scatter. In the base game, each reel set has its Wild, a golden warrior on the good side, and a werewolf on the bad one. These are three-symbol tall, and if they do not cover the whole reel, they can nudge themselves in place so that they do, at random. There is also a regular-sized Wild available in the Clash feature.
Bonus Features
We mention the 1×3 Wilds, which can nudge themselves, at random, to cover an entire reel. When you land a Wild so that it covers a whole reel, it will become a sticky Wild, and you will get a re-spin. If you land one on either set of reels, at the same time, these two will Clash, which means that they will spread a bunch of regular Wilds onto the grid.
If you manage to land three Scatters on either reel set, the two will merge into a single grid, and you will get ten free spins on the new 5×6 grid that has fifty paylines. You cannot reactivate this feature. The Wilds are now 1×6 tall, and hitting one in full will spread four random regular Wilds. However, if you manage to land three Scatters per reel set, then you’ll enter the Ragnarok Spins. Here, again, the two grids will merge, and you will now get twenty complimentary spins. Inside the Ragnarok Spins, Wilds always nudge, and you can only land high-paying symbols.
If you land three Scatters on one grid and two on the other, then you activate the Randomiser feature. The Randomiser is a wheel, which will either grant you a prize that is x50 your bet, give you ten free spins, or will take you inside the Ragnarok Free Spins Round.
GOSU Verdict
We have to say we were quite fond of this game. It may turn some players away due to its not-so-enticing top prize and medium variance, but it’s a whole lot of fun. The dual grid system is cool, especially how the two grids interact, and the extra features pack a punch. Yggdrasil doesn’t usually make basic slots, and this one is no exception. You may need to read over the rules a few times and enjoy some free-play before spinning for cash. Once you finish your Age of Asgard education, you should enjoy yourself, as there’s a lot to like here.
