Ramses’ Revenge Slot Review
Released in October of 2020, Ramses’ Revenge was Relax Gaming’s attempt to break further into the ancient Egypt sub-genre. Most newbies likely have no idea of the popularity that some Egypt-inspired online slots have achieved over the years. Relax’s first touched on Egyptian mythology with King of Kings in 2019, but that title failed to make waves. Thus, many inside the company were hopeful that their sophomore venture would do better. While Ramses’ Revenge was not a massive hit, it did slightly better than King of Kings, and currently, it’s more played than Relax’s original Money Train.
Theme & Design
Ramses is the third pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt. Referred to as the Great Ancestor by his successors, he is the Empire’s most celebrated pharaoh. Despite leaving his mark on history, he’s also left it on the iGaming industry. Off the top of our heads, we can list at least ten slots that feature him in some capacity, several of which are from Gamomat.
Visually, this game reminded us of cel-shaded first-person shooters of yonder. Cel-shading is a non-photorealistic rendering that makes 3-D models appear flat. Ramses’ Revenge may utilize such technology, but some of its animations are very gif-like. It has painterly graphics similar to that of children’s cartoons. Thus the tone of the slot is comical, featuring characters with oversized heads.
You look down at an ancient temple from a bird’s eye perspective. There, the reels spin inside a stone construction flanked by pillars. Once you enter the Free Spins round, the reels sink deeper into the temple, where they get flanked by four fire pits and mountains of gold coins. Cliché Egyptian music enhances the gameplay here, as do cute animations.
The button panel is at the bottom of your screen. In the center is the spin button, with the auto-spin to the right of it. On the left side of this bar are the settings icon, the mute button, and the bet adjuster. On the right is your balance and win info.
Specs & Gameplay
Ramses’ Revenge is a six-reel, four-row game with 4096 ways to win and an RTP of 96.15%, which is slightly above average. For new spinners, the any-way pays format differs from traditional paylines in that symbols only need to appear on adjacent reels for wins to happen.
Bet sizes on this high variance title range from $0.10 to $20. The hit frequency is around 22%, which is acceptable for a high variance slot. Do not let the low max bet cap fool you. The max exposure here is a stunning x49,996, so the top prize is a cool million.
The low-paying symbols here are an eagle, a Lotus flower, the Eye of Horus, and the Ankh cross. Across the board, they’ll get you a prize that’s x0.7 your stake for a single six of a kind. The high-paying ones are head statutes of the gods’ Ra, Sebek, and Bastet, and the mask of Tutankhamun. Those in this group will pay out wins ranging from x1.5 to x4 your bet, for six of a kind.
Ramses is the Wild, and he only appears in the Free Spins round. The Rich Wilde-like explorer is this game’s Scatter, only showing up on the second and fifth reel, and the Scarab is the mystery symbol.
Bonus Features
The Mystery Sandstorm feature activates at random in the base game. When this happens, two to six waves of sand cover the screen, and they leave one to four mystery symbols behind, which morph into a randomly selected matching symbol. The worst thing that can happen inside this feature is walking away with an x24 win.
If two explorers land on the reels on a single spin, you enter the Free Spins bonus round, sinking the reel grid into the temple’s basement. There you get six free spins, and you stand to win more inside this mode. Two Ramses’ mummies will appear on the grid and devour the adventurous explorers turning them into a semi-sticky Wild. That means that these Wilds will stay on the grid for the duration of this round. Once a new explorer appears on the reels, the mummy close to him will eat him and take his place. The occurrence will cause the game to add an extra spin, and the respective mummy’s multiplier will grow by one. If more than two explorers fall on the reels, they will turn into additional Wilds, with a base x1 multiplier. The max amount of Wilds on the reels at one time is four. The round ends when you have no more spins. Note that all the multipliers on the grid get multiplied by each other but will only multiply a win that they helped form.
The Buy Bonus feature is only available in specific jurisdictions. It guarantees you two Scatters, and it costs x80 your base wager.
GOSU Verdict
While the Egyptian motif is passé, we have to credit Relax for trying out something new. The high variance of this slot will not sit well with low rollers. However, Ramses’ massive win potential may prove enticing, causing them to fall prey to its charm. Remember, you’ll need patience on your side to enter the Free Spins round. However, when you do, we are sure that you’ll have a good time. Overall, this is a decent release that is sure to find a niche audience.
