In The Rabbit Hole Slot Review
We recently reviewed Athens Megaways from Red Tiger, giving it a so-so appraisal. Now, we have chosen to assess yet another game from this famed provider founded in the Isle of Man, headquartered in Gzira, Malta, due to it being curiously busy as of late. On the game release front, that is. Red Tiger Gaming, now operating under Evolution, unleashed six reel-spinning products in November 2022. That is a surprisingly large number for this company, Pragmatic Play territory. The In the Rabbit Hole slot was their fifth release of the month and one that garnered some industry recognition. Gionata La Torre, Evolution’s Chief Executive Officer for Europe, pointed out in a press release that this game brings a Spin-ception to the players who are lucky enough to traverse its multi-layered Free Spins mode. In her short statement, she also mentioned being super proud of this one-of-a-kind idea from the company’s development team. We will be the judge of that. Hence, we are diving into analyzing this Red Tiger title below, giving you all the facts and figures regarding its quality.
Theme & Design
Most people have heard the phrase – to go down the rabbit hole. It signifies entering a strange situation and one that grows increasingly complex as it unfolds. It originates from Lewis Carroll’s legendary 1865 novel – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which tells the story of a young girl that goes down a rabbit hole to enter a fantasy world inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures. Thus, the theme of this game is essentially Alice in Wonderland, despite Alice herself not getting featured here.
The presentation of this slot is not a massive departure from standard Red Tiger products. The element proportions are the same as most other games from this provider, but graphics here implement an old-school illustration style, which was popular more than a century ago. It gives this slot an ole-timey feel, keeping with the period Carroll’s book first hit shelves. We should point out that around seventy Alice in Wonderland real money slots exist on the Web, the most famous being Mega Moolah Absolootly Mad, one of the sector’s progressive monsters. Moreover, gamblers should be careful not to confuse this game with Rabbit Hole Riches from Play’n GO, which has a similar vibe and appeared in online casino lobbies in 2020.
Some may say the visuals here are Tim Burtonesque, and we somewhat agree. The colors are a bit washed out, corresponding with the retro motif, and despite this title not having any character symbols, In the Rabbit Hole has some character sound effects. The soundtrack here is decent, boasting a royal cartoony feel. Overall, we would rate the atmosphere of In The Rabbit Hole as Okay. It is stylish, but not in the in-your-face kind of way.
The button configuration is the traditional Red Tiger one, with the spin and turbo-spin functions in the bottom right corner of the screen, while the stake adjuster and auto-spin buttons can get found in the bottom left. The game options can get accessed via buttons in the top right.
Specs & Gameplay
In essence, this slot has a fairly simple setup. It utilizes a 5×3 grid with ten paylines. The betting range here moves from $0.1 on the low end to $200 on the high one. The default RTP of In The Rabbit Hole is 94.78%. It can fall to 90.14% at some operators and go as high as 95.76% at others. The variance here is high, and the max exposure has gotten set at x4,200, which is terrific due to the max bet option of $200.
The low-paying symbols here are different-color card suits, producing wins of x2 to x5 for five-of-a-kind combinations. The premiums are a violet book, a teacup, a top hat, a watch, and golden pepper-like objects. Five-of-a-kind combos from this batch yield rewards from x10 to x100. Wins In The Rabbit Hole get produced when three identical symbols land on a payline, left to right.
The pale flower token acts as the wild here. And it also can generate wins up to x100 when five instances of it stop in view on the same spin. Note that these wilds do not show up in the base game.
Bonus Features
A green symbol with the words free spins on is the scatter of the In the Rabbit Hole slot. When it appears three times on the 5×3 layout on the same reel rotation, landing on the first, third, and fifth reels. It will award seven free spins. It is then that wilds enter the mix, and they stay in play until the end of the round. One last reel rotation of this mode, if three Wins Spins tokens hit, then seven Wins Spins get provided. The deal here is, as the name suggests. A win gets guaranteed on every spin. And when a wild hits in this round, it gets locked in place for its remainder. No retrigger of this mode is possible, so keep that in mind.
GOSU Verdict
Disappointing. If we are 100% frank, we don’t usually have high expectations concerning complexity or novelty regarding Red Tiger slots. This one implements an approach similar to the one Red Tiger implemented in its 2021 Honolulu Nights release, except the grid layout here is 5×3 instead of the rudimentary 3×3 one used in that game. While the max win potential of In The Rabbit Hole should be satisfactory for those that like to bet big, the slot itself is boring. The primary prize allure here lies in the Wild Spins, but getting to them is not super easy. That makes this title frustrating to play. We also think that In The Rabbit Hole did not come close to exploring the limits of its theme. In general, this is a docile slot that is unlikely to have any staying power. In our opinion, it is a pass. If you are on the lookout for some Alice in Wonderland action, we recommend checking out the Wild Hatter from Red Tiger or Agent of Hearts from Play’n GO.
