Gonzita’s Quest Slot Review
Red Tiger has not been in the news lately, aside from making a few headlines for partnering with several South African operators. We have a soft spot for this provider that got bought out by NetEnt in September 2019, a move many look at as the catalyst for Evolution Gaming’s purchase of NetEnt. Now that they are operating under the same corporate umbrella, we assume that NetEnt’s management team has no problem with Red Tiger taking it upon themselves to utilize one of their most famous properties, the Gonzo’s Quest franchise. They already did so with the Megaways version in 2020.
Of course, Gonzita’s Quest is a slot heavily inspired by NetEnt’s legendary title, showing up online on September 22, 2022. Interestingly, interest in this game seems to be super low in the first week of its release. However, we have chosen to be among the first to review it, giving you the low-down if it is a copy of one of the Gonzo spinners or something new entirely.
Theme & Design
Obviously, the inspiration for Gonzita’s Quest is Gonzo’s Quest, one of the most famous online gambling products of all time. It is an online slot released in 2011 featuring a conquistador character based on the 16th-century Spanish one Gonzalo Pizarro. The plot of the game revolves around its protagonist stealing a treasure map and searching for the lost city of gold, El Dorado. Gonzo’s Quest introduced the world to the avalanche/cascading mechanic, and it featured 3D graphics complemented by a pastel palette.
The visuals here don’t stray too much from their inspiration and are a blend of 2D and 3D graphics. The gameplay here plays out inside of a temple instead outside of one, like in the original. The game area is much roomier in Gonzita’s Quest compared to Gonzo’s Quest, and Gonzita is a nice-looking 3D model, a rarity these days. The backdrop of this slot provides a scenic view of a pyramid at sunrise, and the base soundtrack is about what you would expect, a simple drum line. The music picks up in the Free Spins round and when you land a Mega Win. In the bonus mode, Gonzita steps through the reels and sits atop a throne. We have no issue saying that the animations here are choppy, and we don’t understand why Red Tiger’s team did not animate the waterfall images. That contributes to this title feeling a bit low rent. The same goes for Gonzita doing her Macarena dance when the prize tallying in the Free Spins bonus happens.
You can find the spin and turbo-spin buttons in the lower right corner of the screen, while the auto-spin function and the bet adjuster are in the lower left. The mute, full screen and settings options are in the top right.
Specs & Gameplay
Gonzita’s Quest also utilizes cascading wins. It would have been weird if this Red Tiger product omitted this feature. Aside from it, we can tell you that this is a medium to high variance slot, with an RTP setting of 95.66%. The max exposure of this game is x2.580, with the betting range moving from $0.1 to $40. The layout of Gonzita’s Quest is the industry standard 5×4, and the number of winning paylines is ten.
All symbols pay left to right, and three or more identical ones must land on adjacent reels for this game to payout a reward. The low-paying tokens are different-colored mythical creatures depicted on stone blocks, paying from x2 to x8 for five-of-a-kind combos. The high-paying ones are tribal masks, supplying wins from x15 to x125 when five matching ones stop on a payline on the same spin.
There are no wilds in Gonzita’s Quest, and the multiplier stone slab symbols act as scatters here.
Bonus Features
Essentially, there is only one bonus mode in this game, the Free Spins round, activated by landing three stone slabs in the base game, triggering three on-the-house reel rotations. Inside this mode, the middle reel gets replaced by a throne in which Gonzita sits. The other four reels play host to either a slab with or without a multiplier attached. When a multiplier symbol lands on one of these, it resets the spin counter back to three, and these tokens also remain in place. If you manage to fill a reel with multiplier scatters, they get removed, their value gets added to Gonzita’s throne, and new higher-value symbols will now only land on that reel. The ranking goes like this. Сtone multiplier slabs can have values up to x7, golden ones up to x75, and diamond slabs can carry a multiplier of up to x750.
The Gonzita’s Quest Free Spins round ends when you fill all the reel positions with diamond slabs or run out of complimentary reel rotations. When both occur, the value on Gonzita’s throne gets applied to your round entering stake, and Gonzita does her little dance.
GOSU Verdict
We are not a fan of Gonzita’s Quest. Note that we are not saying that this is a bad slot. Nonetheless, we found it boring in pretty much all areas. The max prize is not enticing, and while the game is aesthetically pleasing, that was not enough to make up for the lack of features here. We are trying to find nice things to say about this game, but it just wasn’t our cup of tea. Maybe it will be yours. Try it and see for yourself.
