We would say that we have an amicable relationship with Push Gaming slots. You may remember our glowing review of their hit Jammin’ Jars or that we recommended that you test out Fat Rabbit and Razor Shark. Well, now we have decided to look at another one of their 2018 releases – Viking Clash. It hit online casinos in August of that year and made some decent noise post-release, only to face an up and down ride ever since. It is not among the London-based developer’s most successful reel-spinners, and it has fallen out of favor with players. However, we believe it is a decent Viking romp that you should try. We know this because we already played the game when it came out, but we will break down below why you should also give it a spin.

Theme & Design

Ah, Vikings. The seafaring people of southern Scandinavia were responsible for raiding regions of Europe from the 8^th to the 11^th century. They went westward as far as England and Iceland and eastward to Russia. Historians call the period between 793 to 1066 AD as the Viking age. It was a time when these Norse people focused on acquiring the accumulated wealth of overseas monasteries and weak kingdoms. According to our research, there are over 150 Viking-themed reel-spinners in the online gambling sphere. Right Now, Viking Runecraft from Play n’Go is the most played Viking slot out there, with Ash Gaming’s Age of the Gods: Norse King of Asgard trailing a little behind.

As is the case with most Push Gaming products, they have taken a light approach to their chosen theme. This means the visuals here are cartoony. When we say that, we mean that they feature colorful caricature-like illustrations. Everyone and everything is disproportionate. In all honesty, we like the vibrant use of color and backdrop composition, which is an image of several Viking ships in mid-sail. Once you enter the Free Spins Bonus Round, the background image remains the same, but it gets a darker overlay that features rain and lightning, making it seem like the ships are now sailing amidst a powerful storm. The reels spin in semi-transparent grids, with the game logo on the right side of the screen.

The button’s panel is the standard Push Gaming one. The settings and mute buttons are on the left, while the spin and auto-spin ones are on the right side. In the middle of your screen are the bet/balance info and the bet-adjuster (an up-pointing arrow).

Specs & Gameplay

Viking Clash stands out due to its two-grid setup, where each one is a five-reel, three-row one with twenty-five fixed paylines. Wins here happen when you land three to five identical symbols on a line left to right. The RTP here is an above-average 96.67%, and the variance is medium-high. The bet sizes here range from $0.25 to $100, and the max exposure is a satisfactory x13,200 your stake. Despite its dual-grid configuration, at its heart, this is a pretty straightforward game.

The low-paying symbols for both grids are rune stones, or in other words, rocks with an inscription on them, which are symbols from the runic alphabet. For landing five-of-a-kind on a single spin, they award prizes between x1.2 to x4 your bet. Both grids share two high-paying weapons symbols (ax and hammer), and each one has three exclusive characters. These are a Viking girl and boy, a shaved Viking, one with an orange beard, another with a yellow one, a big mustache Viking, and a red-haired one. The latter two are the most valuable ones, awarding a payout of x16 when they land five times on a single spin on their respective grids.

Viking Clash features two Wilds, a shield, and a ship. The first substitutes all symbols except for the Scatter and only appears in the Free Spins Round, while the latter does the same but only shows in the Wild Ship feature and pays out a prize that is x16 your wager for five-of-a-kind. The Scatter on the top grid is a catapult symbol, and on the bottom one, it is a cannon.

Bonus Features

Watch out for waves in the base game. They randomly occur and activate the Wild Ship feature. It is similar to the one present in Thunderkick’s Wild Heist at Peacock Manor and Push Gaming’s Fat Rabbit. Once it activates, a wave sweeps over both grids leaving Wild Ships symbols on reels three, four, and five. However, the reels with not spin with the Wilds stuck in place as you would expect. Instead, these Ship Wilds move from their position to the left, stopping on any reel where they create a win. When all of them leave the screen, the feature ends.

Landing three or more cannons/catapults on either grid will get you six free spins. Once this happens, the cannon/catapult will shoot Sticky Shield Wilds on the opposite grid. If they land on an existing Wild, that will increase their multiplier by x1.
