Razor Shark Slot Review

GOSU GAME REVIEW

We have examined Push Gaming products in the past. Perhaps you remember our glowing review of their innovative and highly-engaging slot – Jammin’ Jars? This London-based developer has only been responsible for around thirty or so reel-spinners, but a few of them have made major noise, and Razor Shark is one of those stand-out titles.

Released in August of 2019, this aquatic-themed game has done a decent job of remaining popular with players. It has had its peaks and valleys, but it’s often maintained in the top 300 most-played reel-spinners and has even entered the top 100 on several occasions. So, let us look into the secret sauce that has made this cartoony game so playable.

Theme & Design

When you first open Razor Shark, theme-wise, the obvious comparison to make is Pixar’s 2003 film – Finding Nemo. Anything with anthropomorphic fish springs this association to mind. However, seeing as the main character here is a shark, we would say that the theme here has more in common with DreamWorks’ 2004 animated comedy – Shark Tale. Though, Razor Shark does feature a clownfish. You can see it hanging around to the right of your screen.

In all honesty, the visuals here also have a SpongeBob Square-Pants vibe. Mainly due to the painterly ocean backdrop and the bubble animation that goes across the screen. It is all very similar to the popular cartoon. The reel grid here spins in a rusted metallic frame that floats beneath the water surface. The 2D background boasts a few rocks, starfish, corals, and rays of light shining through the water’s surface. Occasionally, you will also see some 3D scalar fish swim across the screen. All in all, the game is pleasant to look at, though a bit flat. However, its soundtrack adds a sense of dynamism, and a Jaws-like theme pumps suspense into the action.

Razor Shark uses the same button configuration as all of Push Gaming’s products. You will find the spin and auto-spin buttons on the right side of your screen. The settings and mute ones are on your left. The bet-adjuster is an up-pointing arrow. When you click it, it opens a window with twelve bet options ($0.10 to $100).

Specs & Gameplay

Razor Shark is a five-reel, four-row slot with twenty paylines. Its default RTP is a decent 96.7%, and its variance is super-high. You earn prizes here by hitting three to five identical symbols on a payline from left to right. You can attempt to do so using bets that range from $0.10 to $100s per spin. If it turns out that lady luck has had her eye on you, you can be the winner of a max prize worth x85,475. That is the theoretical maximum win. You may see this game listed with a max exposure of x50,000 at some spots, but simulations have proven that you can win more if good fortune smiles on you.

The low-paying symbols here consist of images of scuba diving equipment. You have an air tank, a pair of flippers, a diving face mask, and an underwater camera in this group. Landing five-of-a-kind of any of these four symbols will get you a win that is worth x2.5 your stake. The next batch up is the premium tokens. These are different colored sharks. We are not into zoology, so we cannot tell you what type each shark is, as we only recognize a hammer-head and a great white. So, we’ll say reel of their colors. There’s a dark blue, green, purple, orange, and light blue shark. For five-of-a-kind, they pay out a win that is worth x5 to x50.

The great white shark, which yields a prize of x50 for five-of-a-kind, is also this game’s Wild. The sea mine symbol is the Scatter, and seaweed-covered stacks are Razor Sharks’ mystery symbols.

Bonus Features

Push Gaming, more-or-less specializes in high variance slots, and this one is no exception. However, what sets them apart from other providers is that you do not have to wait to enter the Free Spins Round to land a massive win. You can also do the same in the base game, as evident here.

Hitting a mystery stack (four sea-weed symbols) will trigger the Nudge & Reveal mode. It is similar to Push Gaming’s Nudging Wilds featured in their Tiki Tumble slot. When this mode is active, the stacked sea-weed symbols morph into regular pay symbols or golden sharks. The first helps you form winning combos, while golden sharks activate the Razor Reveal feature. Once triggered, each golden shark becomes a reel, and it will reveal either a bet multiplier or a Scatter. Also, on each subsequent spin, the mystery stack moves down/nudges a position on the grid.

Landing three or more Scatters gets you entry in the Free Spins Round. There, the second and fourth reels are full of mystery stacks. During this round, a multiplier gets applied to all wins starting with x1. Every time you activate the Nudge & Reveal feature, this multiplier increases. The Free Spins end when there are no more mystery symbols on the grid.

GOSU Verdict

Yes, the variance here is super-high, but so is the win potential. Razor Shark looks good, and its gameplay mechanics are decent. The Nudge & Razor Reveal features add a dose of excitement, as they can lead to mini-jackpots if that is what you want to call them. Know that this title shares similarities with Tiki Tumble, but we would rank this slot above it. It has more personality, and the enormous win looming will make you sink your teeth into this spinner as you dive to the ocean’s depths in search of riches.
