Mustang Trail Slot Review

GOSU GAME REVIEW

New slots continuously hit the online casino landscape. However, most of the recent games we noticed getting released are from providers we have not yet decided to promote, as they have yet to get a quality footing in the sector. In such a case, we can always fall back on Pragmatic Play, which unleashes a game per week and sometimes more. First, we thought about analyzing the Megaways edition of the newest Big Bass game from Pragmatic partner Reel Kingdom, but we decided not to. That choice was made because it is virtually the same as the previous Hold & Spinner slot from that franchise. It only has a few novel additions.

So, we decided to look at the fresh entry into Pragmatic’s Wild West category. And no, we are not talking about cowboy/gunslinger/outlaw-themed games, but the companies’ line of titles that celebrate Native American culture, US desert nature, and wildlife. Mustang Trail is the latest such product from the famed Malta-based provider, unleashed exclusively on August 4th and attaining worldwide distribution twenty days later. As we expected, it is trending in the top ten rankings in various top markets in the first week of its release, earning itself a look-see from us.

Theme & Design

As touched upon in the intro, the motif here is American Native history and the free-roaming horse that gets most connected to the people who lived in North America before the Europeans came. However, it is worth mentioning that Mustangs are descended from horses that made their way to the current US via the conquistadors, starting as early as the late 1400s, as the original Mustangs were colonial horses from Spain. For many, the North American Mustang is a creature of majestic allure, symbolizing untamed grace. Multiple slots use it as their theme, such as the Mustang games from Ainsworth, Mighty Mustang by NeoGames, and Mustang Gold by Pragmatic Play, which has remained a popular slot almost everywhere.

What Mustang Trail delivers audio-visually is comparable with most top spinners from this company’s arsenal. We would argue that the colorful painterly graphics here are (maybe) a tad higher quality than other titles from this provider. The backdrop in Mustang Trail is a Native American village with multiple teepee tents. The reels here spin inside a wooden ornamented frame featuring various carvings reminiscent of those you would see on Tiki statues. A few subtle animations play in the background, and symbols comprising win combos perform a gif-like action on prize spins.

The soundtrack here is pretty cool, but the sound effects are generic, and many could have been better tweaked to the theme. The winning one connected to the reward sum pop-up is also maybe a bit too loud.

While the presentation in Mustang Trails is more than decent, since we have played so many Pragmatic Play slots, it is pretty generic and predictable to us. It does not differ drastically from what this developer usually crafts.

The button configuration here is the usual one that Pragmatic has implemented for years. You have the spin and bet functions on the right side of the bottom screen semi-transparent panel, and the other in-game options are accessible via buttons on the left.

Specs & Gameplay

Mustang Trail incorporates a 5×3 layout with ten paylines. It has a betting range that moves from $0.2 to $100 ($250 at some platforms), a high variance, a default RTP of 96.04%, and the standard Pragmatic Play max exposure of x5,000 for titles from this variance level. Note this game can also be found boasting RTPs of 95.05% and 94.07%, and the odds of anyone landing its top prize are around ten million to one. The hit frequency here says that you should be hitting winning combinations once every seven or eight spins.

The low-paying tokens of Mustang Trail are your classic A-10 royals, producing rewards of x10 when five instances of these symbols appear on the same spin on the 5×3 grid. The premiums in this game are different creatures, each with its distinctly colored frame. The green lizard supplies wins of x20 for five-of-a-kind combos. The wild goat and eagle give rewards of x50 in the same scenario, and the buffalo and mustang earn you prizes of x75 and x150, respectively, when five of them appear on the screen when the reels stop spinning.

A silhouette of a Native American warrior riding a horse is the wild in this slot, and he delivers wins of x150 when five pop in on the grid, with even two supplying a prize, but one of only x0.5. A golden stallion is the scatter token here, and he only arrives on the first, third, and fifth reels.

Bonus Features

There is only one bonus mode in Mustang Trails. That is the free spins round. You enter it when you hit three golden stallion scatters, which gives you eight on-the-house reel rotations. Inside this feature, appearing scatters get collected into a meter above the 5×3 grid, and every third one reactivates this mode with five extra complimentary spins and a random wild, which will stay in its position until the remainder of the round.

Those residing in regions/jurisdictions that permit Bonus Buys can pay their way into this round if they are willing to pay x50 their bet.

GOSU Verdict

Eh, what can we say about Mustang Trail? In truth, nothing overly positive. It is another nature-oriented Gold-type slot akin to Wolf and Mustang Gold. The latter is an older game that debuted in 2019, and we prefer it over this one because it has a Money Collect feature and a higher maximum win. Mustang Trail is pretty much a one-note slot that gets boring fast. Yes, the top prize here is decent, but it is the usual one Pragmatic Play adds to almost all of its new high-variance releases, and it is not enough to keep us interested in playing this unmemorable game. We say – pass on Mustang Trail and play Mustang Gold if you are really into horse-infused reel-spinning fun.
