In December of 2019, Pragmatic Play released Buffalo King, a reel ride through America’s desert plains. One has to wonder if the Malta-based developer is trying to capitalize on the success of Wolf Gold, their sleeper hit from 2017, or are they trying to snag fans of Blueprint’s Buffalo Rising series. We believe it may be a bit of both. However, intentions aside, this rather conventional Pragmatic Play offering stands on its own, thanks to its wildlife charm and massive win potential.

Theme & Design

So, what is the theme here? Well, we guess that it is the windswept prairies of North America and the animals that inhabit them. If you have ever played Wolf Gold, you will notice many visual similarities between the two. The backdrop is full of sandstone formations that resemble Monument Valley Park, which straddles the states of Arizona and Utah. The quintessential western-movie landmark.

The reels in Buffalo King spin inside a stick frame held together by rope. Your view is from an elevated position, as the beautiful desert landscape stretches out into the horizon. There are a few shrubs in the foreground, and every few seconds, a snake will make its way up a rock in the lower-left corner. The base game takes place at sunset, but once you land the necessary Scatters to enter the Free Spins round, a herd of buffalo charges across the screen as day becomes night. When in this mode, you can see shooting stars in the night sky.

The game’s soundtrack resembles music present in 1950s western movie montages.

The button configuration is your classic Pragmatic Play one. The big spin button is on your right, it has plus and minus icons on each side that let you adjust your bet amount, and there’s an auto-spin option below it. On your left, you can find the mute and settings buttons, and you can get access to the info panel.

Buffalo King plays out on a six-reel, three-row grid, and it utilizes the 4096-ways-to-win format. Winning combos happen when you land three to six matching symbols on adjacent reels, left to right. It is a high variance game that accepts bets from $0.4 to $60. It features a staggering max exposure of x93,750 and an average RTP of 96.06%.

The game has eleven pay symbols. The six low-paying ones are your 9 to A royals, which provide prizes that are x2 and x3 your bet for six of a kind. An imposing rock formation with the word wild under it is the Wild symbol. It can appear on any reel except the first one, and it substitutes all symbols except for the bonus one. A gold buffalo coin is the Bonus Symbol, and unlike the Wild, it appears on all the reels.

Bonus Features

The main attraction of Buffalo King is its Free Spins round, where you can win the discussed massive prize. If you land three or more Bonus Symbols in the base game, you will enter this feature, and if you land at least two Bonus Symbols while inside it, you will retrigger it.

The number of free spins you get to play in this bonus round depends on how many buffalo coins you land. If you land three, four, five, or six golden buffalos, you will get eight, fifteen, twenty-five, and one hundred free spins, respectively. If two Bonus Symbols appear in the Free Spins mode, the slot will award you five complimentary reel rotations.

Any Wild that lands during the bonus round will have a random x2, x3, or x5 multiplier. Note that it has to be part of a winning combo for you to see any benefit. If you have multiple Wilds in a winning combo, these multipliers will multiply each other.
