Book of Gold: Double Chance Slot Review
Going by memory, we cannot think of too many Playson games we have reviewed. Therefore, we believe that it is time that we give some room to this famous slot provider, active in the interactive gaming realm since 2012. Playson may not get talked about with the same amount of reverence as NetEnt or Playtech, but this Malta-based company has a staff of over 250 people, and they have a game catalog of over 130 products. Moreover, they supply more than 230 online casinos with their reel-spinning titles, many of which are crypto gambling sites. Book of Gold is not a new Playson slot, as it first appeared on the internet in October 2018. However, it is the only product from this provider currently on the list of the industry’s top one hundred most-played games. Note that this is its highest ranking ever. Thus, that is reason enough for us to check it out and introduce it to our readers, informing them if they should play or skip it.
Theme & Design
The theme here is Egyptian mythology. Nevertheless, those with experience spinning digital reels know that the motif here is Playson’s attempt to create their Book slot. For the uninformed, this is a genre launched via the Book of Ra slot, created by Novoline and Gaminator, popular both online and at brick-and-mortar gaming establishments. It featured an Indiana Jones-like rip-off title character and some straightforward gameplay. For whatever reason, it struck a chord with online gambling enthusiasts and started to spawn dozens of copycat games. The most famous of these is Play’n Go’s Book of Dead, which is likely one of the most famous slots in history. Multiple game developers have dove into churning out Book slots including, ELK Studios, Triple Edge Studios, Pragmatic Play, and many others. So, Playson did not want its game library to lack an entry or two in this genre. Hence, they came out with Book of Gold: Double Chance in 2018. They followed up this release with several sequels such as Classic, Multichance, Symbol Choice, Double Hit, and Book of Bones.
The visuals here are doubtful to excite anyone. The Book of Gold’s reel-grid gets housed in what appears to be an Egyptian temple. The backdrop is an image of its hall with pillars. There are static sunrays in this painterly background, but Playson has added some specs of dust to make the setting seem a bit livelier. The reels here spin inside a golden frame. It boasts the game logo at the top. Everything here is in 2D, and the colors used a pretty vibrant, and they are dominantly a mix of the three primaries and a few secondary ones. Everything here feels a bit basic. Including the cliché Egyptian soundtrack and the typical Book of Ra/Dead sound effects.
The Playson button configuration sticks to a tried-and-tested formula, where the spin button, auto-spin function, and the bet adjuster are at the bottom central area of your screen, and to the left of them are the mute option and the settings icon.
Specs & Gameplay
Book of Gold is a five-reel, three-row reel-spinner. It has ten paylines and high variance. Of course, wins here happen when you hit two or more symbols on adjacent reels, on a pre-defined payline. The RTP of Book of Gold is a below-average 95.04%, and the hit frequency here is a more-than-decent 38.34. Bet sizes on this game range from $0.10 to $100, which is pretty standard. The max exposure is x2,000, which is not spectacular.
The low-paying symbols of this title are the classic card royals A-10. These pay prizes of either x8 (Q,J,10) or x12 (A,K) for five-of-a-kind. The high-paying tokens here are an Ankh, the Eye of Horus, a statue of Horus, and a golden sarcophagus. Five identical symbols from this batch can generate wins of x50 to x200. What is unique concerning these high-paying images is that you only need to land two matching ones from this group to claim a reward of either x0.4 or x0.8. Naturally, the most massive wins come from hitting groups of golden sarcophaguses on the grid.
The book of gold is the Scatter here, and it also pays out wins of x200 for five-of-a-kind. It can also act as a Wild, substituting all other symbols except for expanding ones.
Bonus Features
Book of Gold incorporates the standard expanding symbol feature that most Book slots implement. At the start of each Free Spins round, which requires that three or more Scatters appear on the grid on the same spin, two symbols get randomly chosen to be expanding ones. These can be low or high-paying ones, and they fill up an entire reel if they can compose a winning combo. Such wins get paid independently of bet lines. Each Free Spins round begins with ten complimentary reel rotations and has a max cap of fifty.
GOSU Verdict
Eh, in our opinion, this is just one more Book slot in a sea of many. There is nothing unique about it. Even its game specs are unimpressive, as a max exposure of 2,000 for a high variance game is disappointing. If you cannot find Book of Dead at your crypto casino and are desperate to play something similar, then you can go for Book of Gold. Otherwise, we honestly do not see why you should pick this title. It is average in virtually all departments. So, we advise that you not go out of your way to seek to play it. Its current popularity must stem from a casino network promoting it in specific markets. Or, perhaps, many players simply rate Book of Gold as a suitable alternative to Book of Dead.
