Slashimi Slot Review
Play’n GO is always in the news. The premium Swedish game developer is seemingly taking over the interactive gaming landscape globally. It recently went live with Sisal (an Italian lottery operator) in Italy, expanded in Spain, and secured a B2B supplier license in Sweden. So, every week news breaks about how this company keeps growing. In the product arena, they are also doing more than well, churning out around two to six titles monthly. They have a couple of releases booked for April and three for May of 2023, after a slot-rich March that saw them unleash five games. The last of these was Slashimi. It hit online casinos on March 30th, soaring to a top ten placement in multiple markets in the first week of its distribution, with Slashimi claiming the number-one spot in Malta. Thus, let us explore what the fuss is regarding this food-inspired slot.
Theme & Design
According to the internet, in its original form, sushi got developed between the fifth and third centuries BC as a method of preserving raw fish in fermented rice in Southeast Asia. It first made its way to China before getting introduced to the land with which it gets most associated, Japan, in the 8th century. Hanaya Yohei, a Japanese restaurateur, gets chiefly credited as the innovator of Tokyo-style sushi, the modern variety that people now know this dish as.
Given the name of this spinner, even without viewing any images of it, one can conclude that the Japanese dish of prepared vinegared rice is its theme. Surprisingly, there are around sixty slots with this motif. In this game, Chef Jiro Miike, the owner and main cook of the featured restaurant in Slashimi, can get seen preparing flavorful meals left off the reel grid. The visuals here are unique in a positive connotation. They are painterly images in a Disney cartoon style but with character designs reminiscent of a Pixar movie. The music is a lounge Asian soundtrack, with some Western influences when winning combos come close to forming. Chef Jiro also reacts in these instances and to other grid-goings-on. We love the presentation here. It has charm, loads of style, and is distinctive, capped with a somewhat 3D feel. The colors utilized match superbly, and Slashimi shows the benefits of a limited palette and how using the right blend of colors can complement and enhance one another. The free spins around here play out with disco-like lighting and sounds, and the big win animations spice things up further with a touch of added visual diversity. Though, they get a bit annoying because of the frequency with which they occur.
The button’s panel is the customary Play’n GO one, suited to fit this title’s presentation. You have the spin functions on the bottom right, the wager sizes in between, and the info icon on the left. Below this configuration lies an information bar, also home to the mute and settings buttons.
Specs & Gameplay
The most you can hope to win on this medium-to-high variance gaming product is a reward worth x5,000 your wager. The bet sizes here range from $0.1 to $100, which is typical for Play’n GO releases, and the number of betways moves from 125 to 1,000 on this 3×5 layout spinner. The RTP of Slashimi is 94.2%. Yet, this spec can change from operator to operator.
Wins in this game get awarded for adjacent token combos from left to right, with only the highest combination getting paid. On every spin in Slashimi, Chef Jiro Miike randomly picks a symbol, and each matching one gets split in two when hit. That is what opens up the 1,000 payways, as Play’n GO likes to call them because an entire screen of two-for-one tokens results in ten symbols per reel. You can see the arbitrary pick token on a banner hanging over the chef’s head.
The low-pay tokens here are A-10 royals held in sushi rice rolls, paying wins of x10 for three-of-a-kind combos. The premiums are fish-featuring sushi slices with various facial expressions on them, offering wins of x0.2 to x0.5 for three matching ones materializing in view on the same reel rotation.
The wild is a soy sauce bottle, substituting all other symbols except the scatter, paying x1 for three wilds stopping on the same spin. And the scatters are drops of wasabi.
Bonus Features
You need three wasabi scatters to attain some complimentary reel rotations in this slot. The number given is four, and you can get an extra one for each scatter appearing in this bonus round. Though, we must mention that before this mode begins, you get to select your sticky two-for-one token from the group of pay symbols, with each listing a specific variance rating. The chosen one will lock in place for the remainder of this bonus.
GOSU Verdict
Without question, Slashimi incorporates uncomplicated easy-to-follow action with splitting symbols. We are fans of rudimentary gameplay when done right. And that is 100% the case here. As explained above, the presentation here is top-notch, and while the RTP could be slightly higher, the other game specs are in line with what you would expect from a popular Play’n GO slot. While it is clear that this product will probably not cause any industry-changing trend, we found it to be a highly-enjoyable cartoony romp that made us smile and gave us a few decent thrills. Once the symbol-splitting grows tiresome, then it will likely be time to move to a new game. But, Slashimi should keep you interested for a little while and provide quality entertainment, particularly for those into simpler interactive gaming.
