Legacy of Dead Slot Review

GOSU GAME REVIEW

We all know that Play’n Go struck gold with Book of Dead. It made Rich Wilde interactive gaming’s most famous character and spawned multiple copy-cats. In the annals of online gambling, it is likely in the top ten most noteworthy slots ever. Though, in all honesty, we think that Play’n Go went a little overboard with their “Of” releases following its success. We recently reviewed Rise of Merlin, but they have so many “Of” products that it is a chore to go through them all. Legacy of Dead came out in October of 2019 and is not only their second-most successful entry in this series, but it is likely the second-most played Play’n Go slot ever. Since January of 2020, it has maintained this status, with Reactoonz 2 and Fire Joker being its only contenders.

Theme & Design

Okay, we said that we weren’t going to count all of Play’n Go’s “Of” slots, and we’re not, but we’ll provide some fun trivia. According to our research, there are over 700 Egypt-themed reel-spinners out there. Thus, we believe that this is the iGaming record because we doubt that anyone can name another theme that is equally as popular as this one. Many blame the physical slot Book of Ra for this sea of Egypt titles. Yet, we believe that casino promos and everyone’s familiarity with this mythology have played similarly crucial roles.

So Legacy of Dead is another in a long line of Egyptian-theme slots that exploit many of its popular motifs. It features sacred chambers, hieroglyph-covered walls, sarcophaguses, and all the other things you can come to expect from titles in this genre. That is understandable. What we do not get is why Play’n Go made this game so similar to Book of Dead. Visually, the graphics here are a bit more advance, but the design of the reel-gird and buttons is more or less the same. It seems that Play’n Go was even so lazy as to make a new soundtrack for this game. It uses the same audio as Book of Dead. We try not to gripe too much, but this is unforgivable. At times, we forgot we were playing Legacy instead of Book of Dead.

The spin and auto-spin buttons are on the right side of your screen, and the info one is on your left. In the middle, between these, you will find the wager and payline adjusters, as well as your casino balance.

Specs & Gameplay

Legacy of Dead is a five-reel, three-row slot with ten paylines. The same as the Book of Dead. Both games’ bet ranges and max exposures are identical. Means, you make wagers that go as low as a penny on these reels and as high as $100. The most you stand to win is a prize worth x5,000 your bet. As you already assumed, this is a super-high variance title. Its default RTP stands at 94.51%, which is 0.26% higher than the Book of Dead. There are several RTP versions of this game floating around. You can find it at some online casinos with an RTP as high as 96.58% and as low as 84.55%. The latter applies to non-MGA licensed platforms. If you see the RTP setting set this low, you likely should not play at that site.

The symbols here are a blend of Rise of Dead and Book of Dead. The low-paying ones are regular card royals 10-A. If you land five identical royals on the grid, you will earn a prize that is worth from x8 to x12 your stake. The high-paying tokens of this game are the Egyptian gods Horus and Anubis, plus Tutankhamun and a mysterious pharaoh. Five-of-a-kind from this batch get you wins that fall between x60 and x500 of your wager.

A golden altar is both Legacy’s Wild and Scatter. If you hit it five times on the grid, you will get a prize that is x500 your bet. The same as landing Tutankhamun five times.

Bonus Features

If three Scatters appear on the grid on the same spin, you get access to the Free Spins Round, which you can re-activate indefinitely. To start, you get eight free spins, and one regular symbol gets chosen to be the round’s expanding one. When enough instances of this symbol land, it grows to cover each position on its reel and awards a win for every payline. Note that expanding symbols do not have to appear on adjacent reels to result in a payout. Same as with Rise of Merlin, retriggering the round gives you a new set of complimentary reel rotations, and a second symbol gets chosen as an additional expanding one. Each time you land three or more Scatters, this process repeats until all nine pay symbols expand.

The same as in Book of Dead, there is a gamble feature here as well. You can activate it after any win in the bonus round or the base game. It allows you to double/quadruple your winnings by correctly guessing the color and suit of random cards.

GOSU Verdict

On its own, we may rank this an above-average reel-spinner. However, seeing as it is a clone of Book of Dead with some elements mixed in from Rise of Merlin and Rise of Egypt, we cannot recommend it. It is a shame that all that Play’n Go decided to do here is rehash some of their popular products, incorporating the same ole visuals and gameplay. If you are already playing Book of Dead, there is little reason to switch over to this one. Unoriginality-aside, if you haven’t played any Play’n Go “Of” release, give this one a try.
