KISS Reels of Rock Slot Review
Play’n Go, the game provider behind one of the industry’s most recognizable slots, Book of Dead, has up its output in 2021. At the tail end of last year, they released six reel-spinners in December alone to complement their portfolio of over three hundred. One of these titles was KISS Reels of Rock, which showed up at online casinos on December 9th, and quickly grabbed players’ attention. It virtually instantly gained entry into the top 150 but fell out of the top 300 in less than a week. However, it has since entered the top 100, where it seems like it will stay, for a while at least. But, let us explore if it has the potential to do more.
Theme & Design
Shout it, shout it, shout it out loud! Even though they often get mocked, and many refer to them as a gimmick act, Kiss is undoubtedly a Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame band. Kiss is America’s number one Gold record award-winning group. Moreover, Loudwire and several other publications have also ranked them as the best live hard rock and metal band of all time. Thus, the impact cannot get overlooked. Music aside, Kiss is also famous for its merchandise savvy. The band has licensed their likeness to just about anyone willing to pay a buck for it. To our knowledge, this is the third online slot that utilizes this band as its theme, and the one from WMS is particularly popular at land-based gaming venues.
The first question anyone has when they hear that someone has released a Kiss game is what songs does it feature? Well, Reels of Rock starts you off with Detroit Rock City. Then, it drifts off with extended riffs and sections of this song. So, in terms of audio quality, this game is head and shoulders above other spinners, as it incorporates legendary music that it mixes with some decent sound effects. Visually, this title features painterly graphics, with loads of 2D animation and a few 3D ones. The reels here spin in front of a grand stage of a Kiss concert, above a crowd of people that have the metal sign up and are jamming to one of the group’s top jams.
The button’s interface of Reels of Rock is the regular one that Play’n Go always uses. Nonetheless, it has gotten a metallic treatment, fitted to the overall look of this slot. The potential bet sizes are in the middle of this configuration, while the spin and auto-spin options are on the right side of this panel. The settings, account/bet info, and the mute options are at the bottom of your screen, housed in a black bar.
Specs & Gameplay
Reels of Rock is a high variance slot that implements a 2-3-4-4-3-2 layout and the 576-ways-to-win format. Wins here get awarded when players land matching symbols on adjacent reels left to right, with this spinner always paying out the highest one. The game has a default RTP of 94.2%, which can slide from 96.2% down to 84.2%, depending on your chosen operator. The wager limits here go from $0.10 at the lowest end to $100 at the highest.
The low-paying symbols of this Kiss-themed spinner are metallic A-9 royals. These will pay from x1.4 to x4 your stake for six-of-a-kind. The high-paying ones are the band’s four members (taking up two positions), which award prizes from x6 to x12 for six identical symbols appearing on the reel grid on the same reel rotation.
The Kiss vinyl record is this game’s Wild, and it also yields rewards of x15 your bet for six-of-a-kind. It also replaces all other symbols. The Scatter here is a plane circling the globe.
Bonus Features
There are three bonus features in Reels of Rock. The first is the Lock and Load one, which can get triggered randomly in the base game. When that occurs, two reels sync, and they display identical symbols. The Drive Me Wild mode can also activate at all times in the base game, and it adds an x2 Wild on reels two, three, four, and five. Though, such a Wild cannot go over a high-paying token nor a Scatter.
Hitting three or more airplane Scatters activates the Free Spins bonus round. It has five modes, each offering a distinct mix of standard and encore complimentary reel rotations. These are Johannesburg, Sydney, London, Rio, and Tokyo. The Johannesburg mode provides twenty standard free spins, plus one encore reel rotation. Tokyo gives you five encores and five standard ones. The other three cities supply the following batches, 16+2, 12+3, and 8+4. Naturally, the higher number specifies the figure of regular free spins. Encore rotations get played out on an extended 6×4 grid.
GOSU Verdict
Cool. Reels of Rock ranks pretty high on our list of the best music-inspired reel-spinners. For sure, it is better than the 2013 WMS Kiss product. Though, that is a pretty decent game itself. Still, this one is far superior, as it offers more modern graphics and more engaging gameplay. Plus, the max win potential here is terrific. X50,000 on a max bet of $100 is jackpot territory. Of course, getting close to attaining such a prize is not simple, but no high variance game makes winning big easy. We predict that Reels of Rock will stay a slot mainstay for at least the next couple of years.
