Fortune Rewind Slot Review

GOSU GAME REVIEW

Play’n GO has been keeping a steady release schedule over the past year, unleashing around three games monthly. The provider, which describes itself as the best gaming entertainment supplier on the planet, has been expanding in North America lately, launching its content portfolio in Ontario and New Jersey, plus announcing its appearance at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. Fortune Rewind is the last game Play’n GO has set loose, premiering one week after its ImmorTails of Egypt. It showed up in casino lobbies everywhere on the 29th of September and is doing excellently in multiple markets. Like other top-end outlets, we got the press release for this game from the Stockholm-headquartered firm when it debuted. It looked interesting, so we thought we should give it a look, something we are doing here.

Theme & Design

The theme here is time travel. Undoubtedly, many will say that this slot draws inspiration from the Back to the Future movies due to its 1980s vibe, paired with the fact that some of the effects here are reminiscent of the lightning ones from those films. Moreover, the main character travels to a Wild West town, much like Marty McFly does in the last movie of the trilogy. The protagonist of Fortune Rewind is Dr. Tempis (clever name). She has the appearance of a steampunk grease monkey who shifts through time using a hand-held gadget, navigating from the Stone Age all the way up to the year 3,000.

The visuals of this game are cartoon-like. They reminded us of those featured in multiple CBS Saturday Morning Cartoons like Conan and Skeleton Warriors, only more modern and richer in color. Dr. Tempis stands next to the 5×3 grid that utilizes the standard Play’n GO button configuration underneath it. The backdrop of this slot changes depending on how the gameplay develops. You will see six eras in this reel-spinner free spins round, ranging from the dawn of time to the future and four periods in between.

While the backgrounds are primarily static in Fortune Rewind, the main character is not. Play’n GO has given her multiple animations, making her react to the on-screen goings-on. The music here is somewhat of a disappointment since it is chiefly a jumbled collection of noises, for the most part, during the base spins. It adapts in style according to the present backdrop, and we found the sound effects used less than appealing. Overall, Fortune Rewind’s presentation is decent but definitely not nearly as spectacular as some other reviews make it out to be.

Specs & Gameplay

Fortune Rewind is a high variance slot with a default RTP of 94.2%, which can go up to 96.2% at some operators, and as low as 84.2% at others. As mentioned, this game features the standard 5×3 layout, boasting twenty paylines and a max win of x8,500. The maximum wager it accepts is $100, and the minimum is $0.1. Wins in Fortune Rewind happen when you line up three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels (left to right) on a predefined payline. Like in most online slots, only the highest win per selected line produces a reward.

The low-paying tokens of Fortune Rewind are A, K, Q, and J royals, paying out wins from x2 to x5 for five-of-a-kind combinations. The high-paying ones are a dinosaur skull, Anubis, a sheriff’s badge, a Walkman, Dr. Tempis’ boots, and a bracelet. If you line up five identical symbols from this group on the layout on a selected payline, this game will pay out a prize worth from x2 to x23 your stake.

An object similar in purpose to Back to the Future’s Flux Capacitor, a power cell, is the wild here, substituting all other pay tokens but not the Time Modulator scatter. Land five wilds on this slot’s game area to snag a win of x500.

Bonus Features

Three bonus features exist in this slot. On any non-winning reel rotations, power cells can send you back in time by re-spinning symbols on the grid and adding wilds until a winning combo gets created. Also, on some winning spinning, you can travel forward in time, with the tokens that formed the prize combination upgrading and the symbols around them re-spinning.

The Time Warp Free Spins round activates when you hit three, four, or five scatters on the game grid. When that occurs, Fortune Rewind gives you fifteen free spins, with a multiplier of x15, x17, or x20 in play, depending on the number of your activating scatters. In this mode, Dr. Tempis shifts from era to era, with each one boasting a distinct Wanted token. Only high-pay symbols appear in the free spins round, and if a winning combo has this Wanted token, the mentioned multiplier gets applied to such wins. Also, hitting three scatters in this mode gives you extra reel rotations to enjoy.

GOSU Verdict

Fortune Rewind feels like a Play’n GO slot, no qualms about that. It is a nice-looking game with multiple backdrops and exceptional attention to detail. We quite liked that one of Sweden’s most famous slot developers went bold with the max exposure setting here, setting it at x8,500, and attaching a maximum wager option of $100. That is most suited for a high variance slot. However, we felt something was missing from this reel spinner to send it over the edge and make us fall in love with it. Maybe another bonus feature would have made it more exciting. Without argument, the Wanted symbols are a nice touch, and so are the re-spin bonuses and the cinematographic intro. But we felt it needed a bit more. That said, this is still an above-average game. It did not blow our socks off but is a well-crafted title representing an original and solid effort from Play’n GO. It would not surprise us to see a sequel in 2023 or 2024 pop up on the Web. If it tickles your fancy, test out Hacksaw Gaming’s Time Spinners, a medieval ghost slot with multiplier wilds that can do damage, and a two-phased bonus round.
