Thor: Hammer Time Slot Review
Another day, another Nolimit City slot review gets posted on our website. We told you that we were going to go through their whole catalog. You probably didn’t think we were serious. Well, BTCGOSU always sticks to its word. Thus, we have decided to dedicate space to Nolimit’s addition to the Norse mythology sub-genre and its exploitation of one of its most popular characters. Thor, the god of thunder. Hammer Time came out in July of 2019, and for the first few months after its release, it was a so-so success. However, after February of 2020, it plunged into sub-2000 territory and never recovered. Now, we get to discover if this was happenstance or a rare miss from our favorite Swedish game provider.
Theme & Design
Ah, Thor. How many Thor reel-spinners are there? Well, by our count, there must be more than forty. Microgaming’s Thunderstruck 2 currently dominates Thor-themed games, but Red Tiger and BluePrint have a few releases that are sticking in there, fighting. Why is this character so popular with players? Well, he isn’t, but he’s a recognizable name, and developers have to pay no licensing rights to use him. For the uninformed, Thor is a hammer-wielding god that acts as the protector of humankind. Prominently mentioned throughout the history of the Germanic peoples, particularly during the Viking Age.
Here we only see him as a symbol. What we do get a good look at is a painterly backdrop featuring a Nordic Forest. In front of it is the 3D reel-grid, framed by an iron construction featuring Norse symbols. Everything has a blue tint to it in this game. The visuals are decent, but they feel par the course and a bit uninspiring. We like the light soundtrack. If you focus on the gameplay, you can even forget that it is there. However, we were not fans of the sound effect here, as we found them too loud and annoying.
The buttons panel is the translucent one that Nolimit has abandoned. The spin and auto-spin buttons are in the middle of this configuration. The bet-adjuster and the mute option are to the left, and you access the settings tab by clicking the three vertical dots on your right.
Specs & Gameplay
Thor: Hammer Time is a five-reel, three-row slot with twenty paylines. Bet sizes here go as low as $0.2 to as high as a disappointing $10. Nolimit has upped the max exposure to x15,000 your stake, but the overall max win potential is still relatively low. Note that this is a medium variance game, which is unusual for this provider, and it boasts an RTP of 96.03%, which is the industry standard. Wins happen when you hit three to five identical symbols on a payline.
The low-paying ones are five rune symbols. They all pay the same. For five-of-a-kind on a line, you get a prize worth x4 your stake. Next up are the high-paying tokens. They are a ring, a goblet, an ax, a helmet, and Thor’s hammer. Hitting five-of-a-kind from this group can get you a reward in the range of x5 to x 15 your wager.
The Wild symbol here is an ornamented W. A purple gem is this game’s Scatter, and Thor himself is the Bonus Symbol.
Bonus Features
The Thor Bonus Symbol only lands on reel five. If you manage to hit it, he will put his hammer down and randomly choose one of three options. These are getting a multiplier, receiving Sticky Wilds onto the grid, or filling an entire reel with Sticky Wilds for the remainder of the mode. After each spin, Thor nudges down, and this feature called Thor’s Lightning Bonus ends when he disappears off-screen.
The Rune Raze feature can randomly activate on any spin. When this happens, all low-paying symbols get converted into the same one. The Hammer Time mode also triggers arbitrarily. It turns all the high-paying symbols on the reels into Thor Hammers.
When you hit two Scatters on the grid, the Scatter Energy Collect feature becomes active. Then, the Scatters will nudge down and re-spin the other reels. If you can land three Scatters, you enter the Free Spins Round and kick things off with ten complimentary reel rotations. You get two more extra spins for any Scatter above three. Thor’s Lighting Bonus is far more likely to activate in this mode than in the base game.
GOSU Verdict
In our opinion, Thor: Hammer Time is an underrated Nolimit City release. Yes, it seems a bit pedestrian compared to their new games, but we thought the gameplay here was fun. There is nothing overly exciting about this slot, and if you think it’s a bit run-of-the-mill, we are not going to argue with you. It is not novel. We admit that. Nevertheless, it is a bit more complicated than your standard reel-spinner, looks decent enough, and has the usual Nolimit bag of bonus goodies. We enjoyed it, though we were somewhat puzzled by its low max bet amount.
