And we are back to reviewing Nolimit City slots. It’s been a while. Okay, maybe it hasn’t, but since we openly profess our love for this developer’s products, we thought it would be cool to step away from their recent releases and look at one of their older ones. Oktoberfest hit online casinos in, you guessed it, October of 2016. Okay, the year you probably didn’t get, but the month was a no-brainer. Sadly, this slot was not a success, and the best it did was hover around the 500-spot back in 2018. Today, it has fallen out of favor with spinners, and despite the standard October surge, it rarely gets played. Yet, we thought it would be a good idea to look back at the humble beginning of a company that grew to become one of the most innovative game providers in the interactive gaming space.
Theme & Design
As you probably know, Oktoberfest is an annual beer festival held in Munich that runs for about two and a half weeks from late September to the first Sunday in October. According to estimates, around six million people visit it each year, and the locals call it d’Wiesn. It boasts a two-century tradition, and it is renowned for breaking records for beer consumed and chickens devoured.
The visuals of Oktoberfest are not bad, but they are a far cry from what we are used to seeing from Nolimit. The gameplay takes place in an empty blurred tavern, and the reels spin on a transparent grid behind a wooden table with some food on it. Everything here is 2D and cartoony. Though, some of the symbols feature decent shading that gives off a 3D vibe.
The soundtrack features Volksmusik-like music and background chatter. If you do not know what Volksmusik is, it is traditional folk music from the Alpine region. It incorporates instruments such as violas, harmonicas, and alpenhorns. In all honesty, we found it a bit annoying here. It was far too distracting.
The buttons panel is the old Nolimit one. You have the spin, turbo, and auto-spin buttons in the middle of this blurred simple layout on the bottom of your screen. The settings option is on the right, and the mute one is on the left.
Specs & Gameplay
Oktoberfest is a simple five-reel, three-row slot that has a medium-high variance and twenty paylines. Bet sizes here go from as low as $0.2 to as high as $100. The max prize that you can win on a single spin is a super-disappointing x500 your bet. Very underwhelming by today’s standards. That said, the RTP is a decent 96.75%, and the hit frequency is one in three spins. You get awarded prizes once you land three to five matching symbols on adjacent reels left to right.
There are a lot of symbols in this game to go through. The low-paying ones are royals 10-A in the form of pretzels on a napkin. The high-paying or Fest ones are ham, a hat, an accordion, a barrel of beer, a tuba, and Wild symbols, which is the word itself. On top of the latter, there are also Prost Wilds and Gretchen and Hansi symbols. Gretchen and Hansi are the game’s main characters, and in the base game, they populate the second and fourth reel in the form of Bavarian banners. They can land stacked and activate the Prost Spins feature. A single beer mug is this game’s Scatter.
Bonus Features
We often talk about how Nolimit City loads its games with bonus features. Looking at Oktoberfest, we can tell you that this was so from the start, as this slot has four. Here, there is a randomly triggered super-stacked spin, one where all symbols turn Wild, a free spins feature, and a regular re-spin.
The Party Spins mode activates at random, and during it, any Fest (high-paying) symbol can become super-stacked. The Pretzel Party Spin also triggers arbitrarily, and in it, all the card pretzel royals turn into Wilds and help you produce massive wins. The Prost Win Spins happens when you land stacked Wilds (Gretchen and Hansi) on the second and fourth reel. They will create a moving Prost Wild (two beer mugs clanged together) that guarantees wins during a re-spin. Finally, landing three Scatters on the grid activates the Bierspins round. It is a Free Spins mode where you get multiplied wins and extra complimentary reel-rotations when you collect additional Scatters.
GOSU Verdict
Oktoberfest has a slightly outdated cartoon style that may turn off some modern players. However, if you give it a shot, you will see that Nolimit City had a clear direction on the path they planned on taking going forward. Yes, the win potential here is not terrific ($50,000), and the variance is medium-high. Yet, with a hit frequency of one in three, if you are a Nolimit fanatic like us, this is a good throwback title. It is also a bit of a history lesson in the development of the Swedish provider, as Oktoberfest was only their third release.
