Pragmatic Play is always up to something. When preparing to write this slot review, we took a moment to see what headlines has probably Malta’s biggest game provider made in the past couple of months. To our surprise, not many. We only saw it partnering up and expanding its reach in Belgium via Hotwin, the company growing its reach in Brazil, and making an appearance at the GAT Caribe Cancún expo in Mexico. The rest of the news we saw were primarily game press releases. The one for the title we will be running down here, Mining Rush, which came out on December 16th, 2024, stated that this is a cluster-pay product that looks to boost Pragmatic Play’s popularity with fans of this genre.
Based on the data we saw, this game did okay in the first week of its release, ranking in the top fifty most-played slots in markets like Finland, Austria, Ireland, Malta, Portugal, Mexico, and Latvia. That is to be expected, given the high-profile nature of Pragmatic Play, as most of its creations trend quickly after they hit the web. So, it was not a shock to anyone, we are sure, that this title did garner an initial spike in interest. But, we are not only here to tell you about how much action it saw after its debut but also how good it is, which we will do below.
Theme & Design
Gold prospectors are among the interactive gaming sphere’s favorite characters. There are loads of these, and games featuring them generally do well with slot lovers. From what we can tell, there are around two hundred and fifty of these reel-spinning products populating the online gambling realm, with Fire in the Hole 2 by Nolimit City, Dynamite Riches from Red Tiger, and this Pragmatic Play release ranking as the most popular at the time of writing. Naturally, Bigtime Gaming’s legendary creation Bonanza is still also doing wonderfully in loads of markets, beating out the mentioned slots in many.
Mining Rush is Pragmatic Play’s seventh addition to the mining genre, with the other six being Gem Elevator, Bomb Bonanza, Gold Rush, Orbital Mining, Old Gold Miner Megaways, and Gold Rush 250,000, a virtual scratcher and not a slot.
Like most entries in this category, this one also has a bearded miner for its hero. Except, like most others, he does not have a long white beard or a long white mustache. His are a yellowish gold. Of course, given that this is a Pragmatic Play spinner, we expected it to look good, and it does. Now, if we are being honest, we expected a bit more from the presentation here. The reel-spinning action in Mining Rush occurs inside a mine, where the miner stands smiling next to the symbol area, which gets encased in a wooden structure that has two lanterns on each side. The miner holds up a diamond-like nugget, while banjo music plays in the background, and he throws in a line or two, depending on what kind of action unfolds to the left of him.
The graphics in Mining Rush are decent, but not much happens in the presentation here to make it overly dynamic, so we can say that we were disappointed with what we saw on this front. It was not very exciting, and things got boring fast in our uneventful session, where we lost loads of free-play funds.
Specs & Gameplay
You get cascading gameplay in Mining Rush, where you must see clusters of five or more matching symbols on the same spin to win a prize. They must connect vertically or horizontally on this game’s 7×7 token grid. In terms of specs, you get a high variance level in this title. Hence, no surprise there, and this winning math model gets paired with three different RTPs, depending on what version of this title you stumble upon. There is a Mining Rush variant with an RTP of 94.51% and ones with a return-to-player setting of 95.49% and 96.56%. The hit frequency in all of them should be 28.49, which is a win in every third spin. The max win should also be fixed at x10,000 your stake, with this game giving you the possibility to make wagers between $0.20 and $240 per spin.
The low-pay tokens of Mining Rush are A, K, Q, and J royals, producing wins of x20 to x40 for clusters of fifteen to forty-nine identical symbols. The high-pay counterparts to these are a pick-ax, a cart full of golden nuggets, and our smiling miner. Clusters of fifteen or more featuring matching tokens from this group deliver prizes of x60 to x150. A red barrel lit like a stick of dynamite is the bonus symbol of this game, and it can show up on any of its reels.
Bonus Features
Given the cluster pay mechanic in play, and the 7×7 layout, we kind of thought we would see more bonus features here. We only got two. The first is the Nuggets one, activated when one or two scatter symbols land alongside a winning combo. When this happens, scatters transform into Nuggets, which can randomly appear at one to four levels. With each cascade, tumble, or whatever you choose to call it, all the visible Nuggets have a chance to pay a random amount, and with each payout, one point gets added to the Nugget. After collecting three, the Nugget increases by one level. At level one, Nuggets can pay between one to five times. At level two, six to twenty is the payout range. At level three, Nuggets pay between twenty-five to one hundred times, while level four Nuggets, or Diamonds, pay between two hundred and one thousand times.
Mining Rush also has a free spin mode triggered by you landing three to seven scatters, which award eight to twenty free spins, respectively. At the start of this round, the triggering scatters transform into Nuggets at random levels and remain locked. Throughout this mode, Nuggets arbitrarily pay cash prizes. Scatters hit during the free spin bonus transform into Nuggets and lock in place. You can pay for free spin round activation for a cost of x100 your bet, and when purchased, you trigger this mode with three to seven or more scatters landed.
GOSU Verdict
Unspectacular, but okay. That is our verdict on Mining Rush. We doubt that this game will have a long shelf life and that gamblers will be playing it for years to come. Its current ranking will probably go significantly down in the coming months, but it is not bad, and the Nuggets aspect works well here, well enough at least to keep us engaged. So, we say check it out for a few demo spins if you see it at your chosen casino, but do not trouble yourself to search it out as it is not worth the effort, as there are loads of cluster-pay mainstays better than Mining Rush you can enjoy.
