Drop ‘Em Slot Review

GOSU GAME REVIEW

Hacksaw Gaming is one of our favorite game suppliers, and this brand is likely the world’s most prominent developer of virtual scratch cards. They have been in the news lately thanks to their entry into the US market by getting their products licensed for use in the state of West Virginia, partnering with BetRivers. Hacksaw also landed an Italy distribution deal back before 2022 ended through 888, and they expanded their reach in Bel Paese via a new agreement with the operator GBO, who runs GoldBet and Lottomatica.

They have accomplished all this while having their product staff working full steam, releasing up to six games in a thirty-day period. Drop ‘Em is a late-July release from Hacksaw, squished between Fred’s Food Truck slot and the company’s Hi-Lo Dare 2 Win game. While Drop ‘Em is not doing impressive ranking numbers anywhere, we are sure that Hacksaw Gaming has again created something exciting, so we analyze this spinner below. Accordingly, fasten in, and join us in running down what it has to offer.

Theme & Design

Drop ‘Em has an early-1900s cartoon vibe. We must say. The only slot we can recall implementing this style is Play’n GO’s series Charlie Chance in Hell to Play. We never reviewed that game, as it launched a few months before BTCGOSU got its bearings, but we remember playing it in mid-2020 and how wow-ed we got but its novelty feel and how good it looked. It was not the best game ever, but it was pretty decent, gameplay-wise, and had a cool follow-up named Charlie Chance XreelZ. Now, the style used in those games and Drop ‘Em is something that animators refer to as rubber hosing. It has attained this label due to how the character’s limbs move. You have seen it in some Steve Cutts videos on social media or in Moby’s Are You Lost In The World Like Me music video. Though most likely, you will associate it with Betty Boop cartoons.

The difference between Drop ‘Em and the examples cited above is that the visuals here are in color, with two weird characters standing on each side of the wooden reel grid, whose backdrop is a painting of a forest. In terms of design, Drop ‘Em uses Hacksaw’s signature look, with more rows than your run-of-the-mill spinner. The two characters liven things up during the gameplay with the yellow, whatever that is, lifting symbol signs and the mouse pointing to the sky.

Like in Charlie Chance in Hell to Play, the music here is apt for the vibe this game seeks to emulate, but here, it is more piano-based, while in Play’n GO’s products, it was a bit jazzier.

The button configuration in Drop ‘Em is the same one Hacksaw always features. Thus, you have the spin functions and the bet adjuster on the right side of the game panel and the settings icon on the left. The Bonus Buy button is left of the settings one.

Specs & Gameplay

Drop ‘Em is a high-variance title with a hit frequency of 48, a max win of x10,000, and a betting range that moves from $0.1 to $100. The action here happens on a 5×6 grid with 7,776 betways, and the RTP setting ranges from a high of 96.21% (the most usual setting) to a low of 88.10%. The high number of betways surprised us, as this figure is more than what Hacksaw Gaming slots usually feature, as most of them have a medium number of paylines.

In this game, you win a prize when hitting at least three identical symbols on adjacent reels, naturally, from left to right. The tokens here get grouped into two batches, the low-pay royals. And the high-pay image symbols. Symbols from the first group provide rewards of x0.5 for five-of-a-kind combinations, and tokens from the second one supply prizes of x1.5 to x5 for the same number of identical images falling onto the 5×6 layout on the same spin. The wild is the word itself, and it can bring a win of x20 when it shows up on the grid five times. Of course, it substitutes all other pay symbols.

Bonus Features

The core of this game is the Drop symbol, as its title suggests. Thus, the drop mechanic initiates after wins have been awarded. When that occurs, a drop token will appear, bumping those below it off the grid, with those above it falling to the bottom of the game layout, and the empty spots on the 5×6 setup get packed with random tokens.

Now if you get three FS scatters to materialize in view on a single spin in the base game, you will get ten on-the-house reel rotations in the free spin round. This bonus mode begins with all the game symbols gathered in a pile left of the game grid and the black mouse joining the yellow, whatever it is, right of the grid. If you hit a scatter in this mode, it shall reveal extra spins (up to x3) or uncover an upgrade. An upgrade means the game will replace itself with symbols from the pile, making them disappear there. However, while it can select the wild, it will always remain present outside the main layout and can be chosen again in this mode.

You also have High Drop and Wild Drop Spins. The first activates when you land four scatters, forcing the game to start the round with premiums and the wild only from the choice pile, and in the latter, only the wild is present, but that mode triggers with five landed scatters.

You can buy all the bonuses here for prices ranging from x40 to x200.

GOSU Verdict

The drop mechanic is similar to the cascading one. That means the gameplay here gets elevated more than what you would get from a basic spinner. At least, that is how we see things. We also believe the Bonus Buy prices may be a bit too high, but with a max win at x10,000, they may be worth it for some. Though we would suggest to anyone to beware of Drop ‘Em, as this game is volatile, and you may go long periods without a win, no matter the alluring gameplay mechanics. While this Hacksaw title was not as good as we hoped it would be, it is still an above-average slot and one that is sure to please many.
