The Lost Boys Slot Review

GOSU GAME REVIEW

If you have followed our site for a while and checked a decent number of our game reviews and articles, then you probably have gotten an inkling that we are massive film buffs. So, when we saw that Blueprint Gaming, the slot studio that is most willing to fork over the money necessary to buy likeness licenses, is releasing a spinner based on one of our favorite 1980s horror flicks, we eagerly awaited to check this game out once it hit casino lobbies. Well, now it is here, as it was released on August 15th, 2024. Hence, it is time for us to give it our famous analysis treatment.

According to Blueprint’s Director of PR – Jo Purvis, the company is super happy to take online gamblers down memory lane by bringing this famed cult classic into the online slot sphere, letting remote game-of-chance fans collect symbols en route to big wins. Sadly, this title is not performing as well as we hoped; at the time of writing, it did not break through in the top one hundred rankings in any market we checked. Still, we had to give it a look-see and held on to hope that this game would live up to our expectations. Below, we tell you how our scan unfolded, ending with an overview of The Lost Boys slot, informing if it satisfied our nostalgia and gaming needs.

Theme & Design

For those unfamiliar with 1980s cinema, The Lost Boys is a horror film that came out in 1987, directed by Joel Schumacher, of Batman and Robin and Batman Forever fame. Those are the movies that casual movie fans will most likely know from this deceased director, who helmed loads of quality features like Phone Booth, Falling Down, Flatlines, The Phantom of the Opera, and many others.

The Lost Boys stars Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, and Corey Haim. Warner Brothers released this movie on July 31st, 1987, and it was not a massive hit at the box office, grossing $32 million on a production budget of $9 million. Yet, over time, it gained a following and spawned two direct-to-video sequels. The first was distributed twenty-one years after the original, and the third entry in the franchise appeared on DVD shelves in 2010.

The story of The Lost Boys revolves around brothers Mike and Sam, who recently moved to Santa Carla, a town plagued by vampires disguised as a biker gang. Sam befriends two vampire hunters, and Mike falls in love with a beautiful girl and begins to transform into a half-vampire. To reverse this change, the group must identify and kill the head vampire.

The visuals in the Lost Boys slot are painterly graphics depicting the main characters of the film, and the city backdropped featured in it. The imagery here reminded us a bit of the style in Quickspin’s Reel Nightmare. The music here is eerie and attempts to capture a bit of the vibe of its source material, adding some of the synth 1980s magic onto the reel-spinning fun present here.

The spin buttons, along with the mute one here, get included right off the reel grid, and on its left side, you will find the bet selector along with the settings icon. There is also a section there listing this game’s five jackpot prizes. You can pull this off screen by pressing the left-pointing arrow at the top.

Overall, we found the presentation of this product underwhelming. Not as good as expected.

Specs & Gameplay

The Lost Boys slot comes in three RTP versions. These are a 92% iteration, a 93% one, and the most standard 95% variant. The gaming action here plays out on a 5×3 grid with only ten paylines, where wins, on average, form on one in every sixth spin, and the free spin frequency is one in one hundred and forty-four. The max win in this medium-high variance spinners stands at x1,000, and the bet sizes here moves from $0.10 on the lowest end to $100 on the highest.

You get rewards in this Blueprint creation when three to five matching symbols land on one of the ten pay lines on adjacent reels. The low-pay ones are A-J royals, paying out x5 or x7.5 for five-of-a-kind combos. The premiums of the Lost Boys slot are the two Coreys, Jason Patric, and the game logo. These symbols generate wins of x10 to x100 when five matching ones hit from this group on a spin. Both Coreys award x10 for five-of-a-kind combinations, five Jasons supply x20 wins, and the logo gives away prizes of x100 when it shows up five times in view.

The wild in The Lost Boys is a box of takeaway, which does not appear in the leftmost column but can pop up anywhere else.

Bonus Features

In this reel spinner, modifiers can activate at random on any spin. When they do, they add effects such as extra Cash symbols, additional scatters, and wilds, or they engage in symbol removal to create winning combinations.

You get the Cash Collect feature here via the collect symbol (vampire) showing up on the rightmost reel and cash tokens (moons) present on the others.  There are also enhanced collect symbols, such as the respin, boost collect, and super collect ones, which provide even greater potential payouts.

Three scatters (a fanged mouth) activate the Lost Boys free spin bonus which gives you then spins and a host to accumulate collect tokens that supply more spins and multipliers for collected cash symbols. Lastly, we have the Rapid Fire Jackpot feature, which we sort of announce in the presentation subheading. It gets triggered by five rapid fire logos, leading to a wheel spin that can award prizes up to x1,000.

GOSU Verdict

We would call the Lost Boys slot by Blueprint Gaming disappointing. If we are being 100% honest, to us, it seems like this company’s team barely tried to make a decent game out of this 1980s horror classic. We expected something on the level of Blueprint’s Goonies slots, but that is not what we got here. Even if you are a fan of the film, we would tell you to stay away from this product, as it offers nothing exciting, novel, or interesting. It does not even look particularly good, and we also encountered way too many losing spins in our two sessions played here, raising doubts about the one-in-six hit frequency.
