White Rabbit Slot Review
We have looked at a few Big Time Gaming slots before. Perhaps you have read our Who Wants to Be a Millionaire review. However, this time, we have decided to analyze a 2017 game from this Australian developer titled – White Rabbit. Why go back in time? Well, for some reason, this reel-spinner got super-popular all of a sudden, following a year of hibernation. At the time of its release, it shot up to a top 30 spot. It even managed to maintain a reasonably high ranking until the end of 2019. Now, all of a sudden, it is back in style. We suspect that an online casino group tied it in with a promotional deal, and that is what has caused this recent surge in player interest. Whatever the case may be, it is a decent excuse to look at this Big Time Gaming product.
Theme & Design
Everyone who glances at this slot knows that the theme here is Alice in Wonderland. So, why does it single out a character from the 1865 Lewis Carroll novel instead of using the book’s original name? It has been more than a century and a half since it came out. It must be in the public domain, right? Well, yes and no. The content of the book and its original illustrations are public domain. However, the word combination Alice in Wonderland is not. So, this is an Alice in Wonderland game, just with a different title.
For those who have been living under a rock, we’ll provide a brief book summary. Alice in Wonderland revolves around a girl with the mentioned name who goes down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by anthropomorphic creatures and experiences a magical adventure. It is a literary classic that both kids and adults enjoy.
White Rabbit is a 3D slot that uses the characters featured in the book, with slight modifications. For example, the rabbit itself here is far older and more menacing-looking than in the original illustrations. The fantasy world is pretty much what you would expect. The reel grid here spins in the middle of the screen, encased by an ornamented metal frame. The win animations here are similar to those in other Megaways games. When in the free spins round, you literally fall into a rabbit hole. The setting shifts, and items such as a piano drop in the background, while the grid configuration changes.
The spin and out spin buttons are in the bottom right corner, while the bet adjuster, the settings button, and the Bonus Buy feature are on the opposite side. The White Rabbit logo is in between these two button groups in the bottom middle of your screen.
Specs & Gameplay
As many of you know, Big Time Gaming invented the Megaways engine, and it gets used here as well. Megaways is a mechanic that changes the number of symbols that appear on the grid per spin. Each reel on White Rabbit (five reels) can contain anywhere from two to seven symbols. The base game has 16,807 ways to win with the max grid configuration. Nevertheless, in the free spins round, the reels can expand to accommodate twelve symbol positions. That increases the ways to win up to 248,832. The default RTP here is a generous 97.24%, and the variance is medium to high. White Rabbit accepts bet sizes that range from a penny to $20. Wins here get awarded left to right when adjacent identical symbols land regardless of size, and the max prize you can win on these five reels is x10,000.
The low-paying symbols in this game are your classic royals 9 to A. They may display characters from the book, depending on how large they land. They pay x0.6 to x2 for five-of-a-kind. The high-paying symbols are three gems and the red queen herself. If you land five identical symbols from this group, you will win a prize that is x2 to x25 of your stake. Naturally, the red queen is the most valuable symbol from this batch.
The rabbit is the scatter, appearing on the second, third, and fourth reel only in the base game. The Wild is an image of Alice running with the word wild across it.
Randomly throughout the base game, a caterpillar may appear on the grid and add up to four Bonus Wilds. These symbols will feature an x2 or x3 multiplier and will substitute all symbols except for the Scatter.
Bonus Features
If you land three Scatters on the middle three reels, you get fifteen free spins, and you go down the rabbit hole. At the start of this mode, you get a random number of ways to win, up to 16,807. This means each reel has five to seven positions. However, each time a cupcake symbol appears on the grid, you get an extra symbol position on that reel, up to twelve. When that happens, you will get three to twelve additional free spins, and the twelfth reel becomes an enhancement one, featuring Wilds and extra queens. When you max out all the reels, you get access to all 248,832 ways to win.
Note that, like with most modern slots, you can buy your way into the bonus round. All you have to do is click the Buy button at the bottom of your screen. For this release, Big Time Gaming chose to call this option the Feature Drop. The full cost to enter this bonus round is x100 your bet, but you can collect Feature Drop symbols throughout the gameplay to lower this price.
GOSU Verdict
What can we say about White Rabbit as a whole? It is a slightly older title that still holds up. We didn’t even get into this game’s engaging soundtrack that perfectly supplements its exceptional gameplay. Big Time Gaming did a superb job of capturing the magic of the original book. The button design felt a bit early 2000ish, but we can live with that. All in all, this is a dynamic and exciting reel-spinner. It is a prime example of how to transfer established material into the slot-verse.
