Treasure Island Game Review
Evolution Gaming doesn’t have a monopoly on money wheel and game show live casino games. Pragmatic Play has rapidly caught up and can give as good as it gets with the so-called king of live casino games. A mighty fine example of that emerged with Treasure Island, a wheel of fortune-style game loosely themed on Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel of the same name.
Treasure Island is wonderfully thematic, as you can experience much-loved characters from the tale, including Long John Silver, Billy Bones, and others. You’re also playing with a lot more than a money wheel, with multiple bonus rounds woven into its design. Some of these are far removed from the type of gameplay you’ll find in the base game. Join us as we explain what else Treasure Island can offer you as we continue our in-depth review of this Pragmatic Play title.
Theme and Design
Pragmatic Play’s Treasure Island is one of the friendlier, thematic live casino games you’ll come across. It doesn’t feature a cold, soulless studio backdrop. Instead, it’s set amidst a desert island backdrop, with two hosts kitted out in explorer’s garb, ready to take you on a journey around the wheel and beyond. While there is a surplus of bonus rounds and features to cover and learn, they are relatively simple and manageable. Therefore, it should take little effort for those new to gambling to get to grips with Treasure Island.
You’ll begin by using the wagering menu, which appears below the live stream. This on-screen display can be used to place all manner of bets and register your actions when it comes to the latter stages of the gambling game. Treasure Island is also mobile-optimized, so there’s no danger if you want to play on iOS and Android devices instead of desktop devices.
Specs and Gameplay
There’s quite a lot going on in Treasure Island, so we’ll explain as basically as we can. Don’t panic, though – gameplay isn’t that complicated. To begin with, there are fifty-four segments in Treasure Island. Three different types of gems appear on the wheel, with 21 Topaz Yellow, 14 Emerald Green, and 8 Ruby Red segments. The other segments are tied to the game’s six bonus rounds, with 4 Great Scavenger, 3 Wild Collector, 3 Ben’s Lost Marbles, 2 John Silver’s Loot, 2 Billy Bones’ Map, and a single Captain Flint’s Treasure, bonus spots present. You can bet on any of these as you see fit before the game commences.
Unfortunately, you won’t know what the value of the gems will be until you bet. Yellow, green, and red games have minimum and maximum prizes of 1x to 5x, 1x to 20x, and 1x to 50x, respectively, determined at random. Rubies appear the least, yellow gems hit the most, while green gems and bonus rounds are landed roughly the same number of times on average in a session. The value of your bets can fluctuate depending on the casino you join.
Once you’ve placed your bets (and you’ll only have twelve seconds to do so), the game commences. Firstly, the three gemstones will receive multipliers that fall somewhere between the figures mentioned above. The wheel will then spin. If the pointer (known as a flapper) lands on a gem segment relevant to your bet, you’ll win that multiplier against your total stake. If it lands on a bonus round you’ve bet on, you’ll be taken to that feature. If you haven’t bet on a bonus round, and it lands on one or any other gem you haven’t wagered on, you’ll lose. You see – we told you that the gameplay was simple. If you’re wondering, the average RTP sits between 96.3% and 96.5%.
Bonus Features
There are six bonus rounds in play here, so there’s plenty for you to explore, and many of these features vary wildly in terms of how they are played.
First up, we have the Wild Collector Bonus. This features another wheel. During the spin, a range of gems will be highlighted, with your payout determined by the range selected. You’re guaranteed a win of 2:1 but could win up to 900:1 here. The RTP of this mode is 96.56%.
In the Great Scavenger Bonus, you’ll come across an instant win bonus. Each gem has a multiplier, and this is multiplied by the number of “lights” that are lit up on the wheel for the gems. That will equate to your prize. However, it is possible (but not guaranteed) that you could end up with larger multipliers if the Great Scavenger segment is highlighted.
Ben’s Lost Marbles sees you taken to a mini-game, which features a wall. What follows is a Pachinko-style game, which sees balls or marbles dropped from above. At the bottom are nine drop zones, five of which have the same multipliers as the gems (potentially increased by up to 4x), while the other four are given random multipliers. Up to ten balls can land in each drop zone. Dice are then rolled to determine how many of the eight buckets of balls are dropped into the game. The first five buckets have five balls, while the remaining three have a cool ten marbles/balls. The more you get into the drop zone, the more you’ll win, with the top prize worth up to 10,000x in a round that has a varying RTP of 96.39% to 96.54%. Okay, this bonus was a little more complicated than the rest, but not to any level where you’ll be left baffled.
There are three more features to cover. The first is John Silver’s Loot. You don’t need to do anything here but watch. A bingo machine contains forty balls tied to gemstones with multipliers of up to 20x. Some of them are black, and you don’t want those. Up to ten balls will be drawn, but black ones can drop the number of balls drawn by five, but its multiplier is still added to your tally. Once you run out of calls, the feature ends. It has a top prize of 10,000x and an RTP of 96.54%.
Captain Flint’s Treasure is the most difficult bonus to trigger. This time, you’ll need to work your way through six levels, with four hidden barrels on each row. You can pick a single barrel per line. If a gem is inside your barrel, you’ll win the multiplier and get to have a crack at the next level/row. If you land a skull, the bonus ends. To make things easier, the first two rows have no skulls inside the barrels. Up to 15,000x can be won in Captain Flint’s Treasure Bonus, while the RTP rate is 96.52%.
We’ve saved the best until the last. Billy Bones’ Map has the largest cash prize available on Treasure Island. You can win up to 15,450:1 here. You’re greeted by an 8×8 grid. Here, in a game reminiscent of Minesweeper, you’ll need to uncover three keys. They are hidden, and you’ll get to pick five squares. Behind each is a gemstone with a multiplier, which will be paid out when you find them. However, if you find all three keys, you’ll receive a massive prize from a treasure chest, which could be worth up to the figure mentioned. The RTP here is 96.55%, which is very agreeable given the prizes at stake.
GOSU Verdict
Treasure Island is one of the first compilation games we’ve seen in the live casino sector. Yes, on the face of it, this is a money wheel or wheel of fortune-style game show release. However, as you’ll see with its bonus rounds, there are plenty of different types of live gambling games for you to enjoy if you make it that far. In short, you’re getting an array of different games, and this plethora of options is guaranteed to keep you entertained.
There are many similarly designed wheel-based game show titles out there. If you’re only interested in the base game, any of those will suffice. Pragmatic Play’s Treasure Island is a game that you play solely for the bonuses. As far as originality goes, we recommend setting sail for Treasure Island.
