Gordon Ramsay: Hell’s Kitchen Slot Review
We do not need to waste words describing NetEnt, and what they have done in recent years. Thus, we will skip the usual few provider sentences and go straight into talking about this slot. It is a fresh release that hit online gambling platforms on March 11th of 2021 and caused quite the stir. Pun intended. Expectations were high for this NetEnt release, given that the Hell’s Kitchen license and Gordon Ramsay’s likeness must have cost them a pretty penny. However, the investment seems to be paying off. Despite a slow start, this game is now trending in the top 100. Industry predictions are that it will stay there for a while as more platforms begin to feature it.
Theme & Design
Hell’s Kitchen is a cookery reality show that revolves around chefs competing for a final prize. It is the brainchild of British chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsay, who rose to fame via the documentary TV miniseries Boling Point. The original UK version of Hell’s Kitchen ran for four seasons between 2004 and 2009 on ITV. Its American counterpart began running in 2005 on the FOX network, with new episodes still airing. It has received six Primetime Emmy nominations and now features eighteen episodes per season.
Presentation-wise, this is a nice-looking game. It features a decent blend of 2D graphics and some 3D models. Atmospheric lighting adds a moody game show-like atmosphere to the kitchen setting. The reels here spin in front of an empty table, with five soft lights hanging above each reel. The backdrop is full of Hell’s Kitchen logos in the colors of the two teams featured in the game, the red and blue ones. The animations here reminded us of some old PS1 fighting games, as they look like rotoscoped visuals. That is an animation process, where animators trace over some existing video footage. What is exciting about this slot is that it features exclusive lines from Gordon Ramsay himself, who tells you things like – let’s get cooking, looks fantastic, and that is made with passion as you spin reels en route to prizes.
We loved the button setup of this game. The design is super-clean, with all the options taking up only the table section of your game view. The spin and auto-spin functions are in the middle within a dark, semi-transparent mini-panel, while the win/balance info is to the right of it. Next to the latter is the value adjuster. On the left side of your screen, you will find the three-bar icon that takes you to the settings tab, and on its right is the info button and the bet-adjuster.
Specs & Gameplay
Gordon Ramsay: Hell’s Kitchen is a five-reel, three-row game with twenty paylines. It is a low variance title with an RTP of 96.07% and a max exposure of x1,000 your stake. Bet sizes here range from $0.2 to $400. So, while on the surface, this low-variance reel-spinner may seem that it cannot yield a sizeable prize, if you bet the max amount, theoretically, you could walk away with $400,000 in your pocket. Wins here form when you land three to five identical symbols, left to right, on a payline.
The low-paying symbols of this game are A-J royals, in the form of glowing grills. Hitting five matching grills will award you a win between x0.75 to x1.5 your stake. The high-paying tokens here are Ramsay’s signature dishes. These are a lava cake, an orange cocktail, a burger, and Beef Wellington. Landing five identical symbols for this group will get you a reward in the range of x2.5 to x10. Naturally, the Beef Wellington is the most delicious and most valuable five-match combo of the game.
The Hell’s Kitchen logo is the Wild here, substituting all pay symbols except the Gordon Ramsay Scatter.
Bonus Features
The real excitement in this game lies in the Team Challenge Free Spins. You activate this mode by landing three or four Gordon Ramsay Scatters on the grid, showing up only on reels one, two, four, and five. Three Scatters get you ten complimentary reel rotations, while four get you fifteen. The round starts by letting you choose the red or blue side. Once you make your pick, the screen splits into two 5×3 grids for each team. Before a spin takes place in this round, special symbols appear on the table before the two grids. These are dishes that can contain x2, x3 multipliers, and Wilds in the color of each team. Depending on which of these shows up, they get applied to the team grid whose color they feature.
At the end of the Free Spins Round, if your team wins, you get treated to a Bonus Round. In it, you click on fifteen menus that hide multipliers and X symbols. Once you select three X symbols, the feature ends, and you collect your multipliers on the exit.
The game also has another feature named Ramsay’s Wild. It triggers at random, dishing out between five and seven Hell Kitchen Wilds, indiscriminately. They get accompanied by wild Gordon Ramsay commentary and some cool 3D animations.
GOSU Verdict
Decent. We’ll go so far as to call this game above average. In reality, it offers nothing new. However, it puts Gordon Ramsay to good use, and it is a decent exploit of his most popular TV show. It feels like a polished game and plays like one. That said, its base gameplay is uneventful, and things grow stale quickly. We did like the Team Challenge Bonus Round and the large max bet. We rarely review low variance titles, so if you are in the market for one, give Hell’s Kitchen a try.
