Greek Gods Slot Review
After a short break, we are back to reviewing Pragmatic Play reel-spinners. Pragmatic is not the most innovative slot provider in all of online gambling. Yet, they continuously produce above-average reel-spinners that look nice and are super-playable. With close to 300 titles in their game library, expect to see a few more Pragmatic reviews soon.
Today, we focus on one of their 2019 releases, Greek Gods. It hit online casinos at the tail end of that year and was popular for about a month following its debut before dropping off the map. Now, we have a chance to have a look-see if this was due to any specific reason or was it a case of weak marketing and no word-of-mouth.
Theme & Design
According to our estimations, over 300 Greek-mythology-themed slots are floating around in the interactive gaming sphere. The Age of the Gods series and NetEnt’s Divine Fortune are likely the most famous titles from this category. So, with players so into ancient civilizations and mythology, we cannot blame Pragmatic for trying to get a piece of this section of the market. They further expanded their Greek presence by releasing Spartan King in 2020.
For those that have no interest in history, Greek mythology is a genre of Ancient Greek folklore. These stories have been retold as an oral-poetic tradition throughout the ages. The main character of Greek Gods seems to be Zeus, the ruler of Olympus. He is the god of thunder and sky, and he appears here along with his wife, Hera.
If you are into Pragmatic games, this one uses a very similar visual feel to many of their post-2017 releases. You get treated to the same vibrant painterly graphics that you have grown accustomed to seeing. All of Pragmatic’s slots are visually appealing. Though, their style is repetitive. The reel-grid in Greek Gods spins inside a golden temple at the top of Olympus. You can see a dark sky with heavy clouds in the background, and lightning bolts shoot across the screen when you land a substantial prize. We found the games’ soundtrack a bit aggressive, as it’s quite loud and fast-paced. Some of the sound effects had a bit of an arcade feel to them.
The button configuration is your standard Pragmatic one. All you need to know is that the spin button and bet-adjuster are on the right, and all the other buttons are on the left. We have always liked this transparent/semi-transparent button design. It is easy on the eyes and allows the visuals to shine.
Specs & Gameplay
Greek Gods is a five-reel, three-row slot that implements the 243-ways-to-win format. It is a medium variance game with a default RTP of 96.5%, slightly above the industry average. Know that this reel-spinner comes with seven different return-to-player settings. So always, check what RTP your operator has chosen. Bet sizes here go as low as $0.25 and as high as $125. So, it is suitable for rollers of all sized bankrolls. You form winning combos by hitting identical symbols on adjacent reels, left to right. If you get super-lucky, the max win that Greek Gods can cash out is worth x4,320 your stake. Not terrific, but decent.
The low-paying symbols in this game are A-10 royals. Hit five matching card tokens, and win a prize that is x2 your wager. Greek Gods’ high-paying symbols are a golden chalice, a harp, Hera, and Zeus. These payout rewards between x3 and x6 for five-of-a-kind. Naturally, Zeus leads this pack as the most valuable one from this group.
The Wild is a symbol with the word wild on it, and a lightning bolt is the Scatter. The latter only appears on the third, fourth, and fifth reel and allows you entry in the Free Spins Bonus Round. It also helps you claim random rewards if it lands stacked.
Bonus Features
In the base game, random rewards appear above reels three, four, and five. To win them, you need to have a stack of Scatters on a corresponding reel. The three rewards are a money prize (up to x50), free spins, and the Wheel of Fortune mini-game. In the Free Spins Round, these prizes appear above all five reels.
When you activate the Wheel of Fortune mini-game, you get one spin on the twelve-segmented wheel. Each section has a multiplier attached, ranging from x10 to x1,000. You can activate multiple wheels on a single spin. However, to do that, you will need to hit more than one Scatter stack on the grid, on reels with the Bonus icon at the top.
Landing five or more Scatters on the grid provides you with access to the Free Spins round. You can also enter it by landing a stack of Scatters on a reel with the Free Spins icon at the top. You get eight complimentary reel rotations for five landed Scatters in this mode. Activating this round via regular gameplay means that you will get the default number of free spins (three) plus one for each Scatter on the grid. The max amount of free reel rotations that you can earn in this round is forty.
GOSU Verdict
Hmm. What kind of judgment should we pass on a game that incorporates nothing novel, and in all honesty, is boring? Pragmatic sticks to their formula here. However, for experienced players like us, that is dull and unimaginative. Greek Gods’ win potential is average, and we have already seen these kinds of visuals and gameplay in other Pragmatic releases. It is a lot of the same-ole, same-ole. Everything feels repetitive and generic. The Wheel of Fortune spices things up, but it is not enough to pull this game out of mediocrity.
