Big Bass Bonanza Slot Review
Have you heard of the slot provider Reel Kingdom? Well, do not be upset if you haven’t, as few have, and there is little information regarding this developer online. All we know is that before the summer of 2020, they teamed up with Pragmatic Play for the latter to release their iGaming products. Pragmatic claims that the Reel Kingdom team has worked on designing some of the more popular reel-spinners for the land-based industry and that they are now entering the digital sphere. Big Bass Bonanza was their eighth release hitting online casinos in December of 2020. Surprisingly, this rather conventional reel-spinner has proven to be a minor hit. Two months following its release, it has gathered quite the fan base and has raked in impressive player numbers.
Theme & Design
The theme here is obviously, fishing. In all honesty, this title boasts a visual similarity to Real Time Gaming’s 2014 Fishing Frenzy release, which has also returned to the limelight. What can we say, maybe the dawn of fishing-theme slots is upon us? Make way to ancient Egypt. Appearance-wise, this game is way too flat-looking for a modern release. It features vibrant colors and a happy-go-lucky main character, who looks to be more lumberjack than a fisherman. The music is quite joyful and reminiscent of 1980s teen comedies. The game incorporates a blend of 2D and 3D graphics to a mediocre effect. Everything here seems a bit jammed, which causes a lot of visual tension.
The game plays out underwater, with its reels spinning below the Big Bass Bonanza logo. The background is a 2D graphic that mixes a stock photo of surface water and digitally painted elements. The reel grid is transparent, and vertical lines of bubbles separate each reel. When you land a Big or Epic Win, gold coins fill the screen as the game tallies your prize. Specific symbols in the Free Spins round display movement via unimpressive animations.
The spin button is in the bottom right corner of the buttons’ panel, and it incorporates the Reel Kingdom logo. Below it is the auto-spin function, and to its sides are the plus and minus bet adjusters. On the left side of the same panel are the mute, settings, and info buttons. To the right of them are the credit and bet information. In the center of this panel, the game wishes you good luck, encourages you to bet, and informs you of your wins.
Specs & Gameplay
Big Bass Bonanza is a five-reel, three-row slot with only ten paylines. It is a medium to high variance game with an RTP of 96.71% and a max exposure of x2,100. Wins happen when you land three or more identical symbols on a payline, left to right. If you think the maximum win potential of this title seems a bit low, compare to the other games we’ve reviewed, know that the max bet size here is $250. So, the most you stand to win on this title on a single spin is $575,000, which isn’t too shabby. The minimum bet is $0.10.
The low-paying symbols here are your classic A to 10 royals. Land five identical symbols from this group and win a prize that’s x10 your bet. The high-paying symbols are a fish, a fishing kit, a dragonfly, a rod, and a bobber float. If you manage to hit five identical symbols on a payline from this batch, you’ll win a prize that ranges between x20 and x200.
The jolly fisherman is this game’s Wild. He replaces every other symbol, except for the Scatter, and appears only in the Free Spins round. The bass is the Scatter, and you need three or more bass to enter the Free Spins. Big Bass Bonanza has Money Symbols (green fish), which also appear only in the Free Spins and have a monetary value attached.
Bonus Features
As mentioned, you enter the Free Spins round by landing three or more Scatters. Three Scatters get you ten complimentary spins, four get you fifteen, and five get you twenty. Inside this round, the Wild appears. If there are any Money Symbols on the grid along with it, it collects all their values.
At the top of the screen in this round, you have a twelve-section bar. Each time you hit four Wilds within this round, you reactivate this feature, attaining ten more free spins, and your Wild’s multiplier grows, x2, x3, and x10. After you retrigger this feature for the third time, you will not be able to reactivate it anymore.
Also, watch out for the Dynamite feature. It activates when the Wild is on the reels, as sticks of dynamite explode and turn regular pay symbols into money ones, which the fisherman then collects. It is pretty rare. So, be happy when it occurs.
GOSU Verdict
What positives can we say about Big Bass Bonanza? Well, it features a slightly above-average RTP and a decent bonus round. Other than that, there are a few areas that we can layer with compliments. The game’s visual feel is very retro, and the way it fuses digitally-painted images and stock photos is amateurish. Don’t get us wrong, this slot is playable, but its burst of popularity must stem from its theme and simplicity. We did like the cheesy music. It kept us in a reel-spinning mood.
