Innovations rarely happen in the slot-verse. For one, it’s hard to come up with novel concepts for such a limited format, and players do not wish to waste time learning how to play a game. That said, from time to time, developers throw out surprise offerings that stand out due to their unconventional gameplay. Play’n GO’s Reactoonz is one such instance. Released in October of 2017, this is a sequel to Play’n GO’s 2013 slot, Energoonz. It features a distinct grid layout, unique game mechanics, and a delightful set of characters.

Theme & Design

The theme here is extraterrestrial. However, the creatures here are not of the scary Alien-kind but resemble those from Pixar’s two Monsters Inc. movies. If you have ever played Energoonz, you’ll notice similarities in both the character-design, as well as the use of tesla-like coil bolts.

Reactoonz is a colorful game where space acts as a backdrop, as the grid pattern floats in the center of your display. You can see a mystical vortex orb on your left and a winnings display below it. The Quantum Leap meter is in your top right corner, and the three-eyed Gargantoon hovers under it. The meter plays a crucial part in activating the bonus feature, while the Gargantoon sits idle until you set him loose.

A slow futuristic soundtrack plays in the background, with alien voices chiming in once in a while to break up the monotony. The Gargantoon’s snoring is also part of your audio experience. The spin and auto-spin buttons are on the right side of your game panel, and the info page one is on your right. In between, you get to set your bet size.

Specs & Gameplay

Reactoonz does not have classic reels. The game plays out on a seven-reel, seven-row layout, and it utilizes cascading mechanics. This means symbols fall onto the grid, and the slot pays out wins for clusters of five or more matching symbols in any direction. Once this happens, these symbols explode, and new ones fall into their place.

Reactoonz has an RTP of 96.51%, which is slightly above the industry average and is close to Energoonz’s max RTP of 96.69%. It is a high variance game, with a max exposure of x4,570, and it accepts bet sizes that range from $0.2 to $100.

There’s a nice variety of alien symbols in different colors and shapes here. However, the main thing that sets them apart is the number of their eyes. The one-eyed aliens are the low-paying symbols, while the two-eyed ones are the high-paying ones. If you manage to land five in a cluster, depending on which one, you should get a win between x0.1 to x1 of your stake. If you hit fifteen or more, you could get a win up to x750 your bet.

The Orbs and the Gargantoon are the Wilds, and there is no Scatter in this game. When an initial non-winning spin occurs, the Gargantoon may place from four to eight Wilds on the grid. If any four symbols form a square, they will create a Giantoonz. In such an instance, any wins get doubled if this new symbol is part of a winning combo. Also, a random one-eyed symbol type gets marked as the fluctuating symbol per spin. If it happens to be part of a winning combo, it will leave two Wilds behind it.

Bonus Features

We mentioned the Quantum Leap Meter, which has five tubes and which you can find in the top right of your screen. You fill it by landing winning combos. Each one holds twenty-five symbols. Once you fill each one up, the Gargantoon will provide you with a random feature. When you fill all five, the Gargantoon himself will come into play, jumping on the grid as a 3×3 Wild. On the second cascade, he will appear twice as a 2×2 Wild, and on the third, he will split into nine 1×1 Wilds. Only with the Gargantoon’s help can you win the max prize.

However, before you fill up all five tubes and involve the Gargantoon in your gaming adventure, by filling any of the four preceding ones, you activate one of four random features. These include Incision, Implosion, Demolition, and Alternation. Incision forms an X-pattern across the grid, turning all symbols in its path into a Wild or a common symbol. Implosion turns three to six symbols into Wilds. Destroy annihilates all the low-paying symbols in view, making way for new ones to fall in their place. Alteration picks one one-eyed alien on the grid and turns it and all similar ones into a new symbol.
