Motley Crue Slot Review
We did a series of Play’n GO slot reviews a while back, and we promised we would move away from looking at releases from this famed company for a slight period. However, we recently saw that they are expanding their portfolio in Italy, and they got a license to operate in West Virginia. The latter is super important news for this brand, as West Virginia is only one of six US territories to allow online casino gaming. Thus, it is an opportunity for Play’n GO to deliver their slots and RNG table products to American gamblers in one more state.
Their entry into this market prompted us to see what new games Play’n GO has churned out, and it instantly caught our eye that there is a new addition to the Phaethon of branding rock spinners, with Motley Crue joining this pack. Their licensed game dropped on December 22nd, 2022, and it expectably climbed to the top ten rankings in North America. So, let us analyze it and conclude if it does the legendary band justice and lives up to the accrued hype.
Theme & Design
Must we really go into who Motley Crue are and what they have done? Well, we guess some of our readers are not so rock-music-savvy, or they are just too young to care about bands for what to them is yore. While some will call Motley Crue heavy metal, we don’t precisely agree with this classification. Believing the hard rock label is more apt for this group, an ensemble founded by drummer Tommy Lee, bassist Nikki Sixx, lead singer Vince Neil, and guitarist Mick Mars. Those four as a pack, along with past members Randy Castillo and John Corabi, are responsible for nine top ten albums on the Billboard 200 chart and seven platinum or multi-platinum certifications. Though, one can argue that Motley Crue’s members are as equally famous for their hedonistic lifestyles as they are for their music. Still, their most massive hits – Looks That Kill and Shout at the Devil are instantly recognized by virtually music lovers worldwide.
Since we have dealt with the theme of this game, let us move on to its presentation. In our eyes, the visuals and animations on hand here are a notch above what we would expect from a Play’n GO game. What took us by surprise is that this slot featured Motley Crue video clips and the band’s signature tunes. It also goes heavy on animations, something we rarely see utilized so much in releases from this company. The graphics are cartoony ones, painterly images done in the style of the late 1990s and early 2000s comics and cartoons. The base game here occurs in front of a biker bar while the free spins mode transpires through its doors.
Aside from Motely Crue music, the sound effects inserted in this game fit its rock motif and blend in quite nicely with the aggressive soundtrack. The button configuration is the one that Play’n GO always uses.
Overall, we quite like the look and feel of this spinner. And we credit Play’n GO for going the extra mile to make Motley Crue branching off onto digital reels feel special.
Specs & Gameplay
The RTP range of the Motley Crue slot falls between 84.2% to 96.2%, with the most commonly found return-to-player setting on this game being 94.2%. That is something we did not expect. Particularly when factoring in that the variance here has gotten set to medium. We would have thought the RTP would have been higher than 96 by default. The max win potential of this slot is x5,000 on a maximum bet of $100. The lowest wager someone can make on this spinner’s reels is one of $0.2. The Motley Crue game implements a 5×4 grid with twenty paylines, and it has what many call the Buffalo mechanic, or wilds with multipliers. Prize combos get formed here when at least three matching symbols land along a payline on adjacent reels beginning from the leftmost side.
The low-pay tokens in play are A-J royals, producing wins of either x2.5 or x4 for five-of-a-kind combinations stopping in view. The premiums, represented by the band’s four members in cartoon form, generate wins of x15 to x25 for the same amount combos. The wild, which is the word itself, yields identical wins, and it substitutes all other symbols except the scatter and the girl token. The scatter is a shiny chrome pentagram, and what this game calls the girl token is a pair of neon lips. Their roles get explained below.
Bonus Features
The bonuses of this online gaming product can get separated into two groups. The first is the base game modifiers consisting of the Wild Side, Live Wire, and Girls, Girls, Girls modes. The Wild is a re-spin that can activate on any losing spin, and when it comes alive at random, a barrier gets located on the far right of the grid, extending one reel left, filling the grid with wilds. The Live Wire feature also triggers at random but on any regular reel rotation, adding up to five wilds on the 5×4 setup. Note that Girls tokens can only fall on the middle three reels, and when one of these symbols drops in view on the third one, it awards the multipliers on the game’s layout.
To gain entry into the Motley Crue free spins, you must hit at least three activating pentagram scatters on reels one, three, and five. The round can award from six to ten free spins at random, and each of the mentioned three modifiers above is active here. Plus, a Kickstart My Heart feature can get triggered on a Wild Side respin, giving away up o x10 multipliers based on a Wild Side barrier position.
GOSU Verdict
Does Motley Crue by Play’n GO match up in quality to NetEnt’s Guns N’ Roses slot? We would say that it falls short of accomplishing this feat. And we would not put it as up to par with Play’n GO’s own Kiss Reels of Rock game. That said, we would say that the Motley Crue slot is a pretty decent game in its own right. And one of the better rock ones in the gaming sphere. It is one that fans of 1980s music should not miss.
