Def Leppard Hysteria Slot Review
Play’n Go has been featured in headlines quite heavily this month. First, news broke that they will bring their content portfolio to Ontario’s newly regulated market. Then, they announced that starting from April 1st, Play’n Go would begin offering its products to territories regulated by the Licensing Authority of Gibraltar. They followed that up with a bulletin that they struck a deal with the Dutch lottery for the latter to provide the entire Play‘n Go game collection to residents of the Netherlands. On top of all this, Play’n Go has not stopped releasing slots.
Def Leppard Hysteria is a part of Play’n Go’s branded rock series, and it appeared on the internet on the last day of March. A week later, the company followed its release with Lordi Reel Monsters, a heavy metal-theme game featuring the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest winners, the Finish hard rock/heavy metal band Lordi. So far, Def Leppard Hysteria has proven to be only a modest hit for Play’n Go, but since it utilizes the music and likeness of one of the most famous English rock bands, we could not pass up an opportunity to review it.
Theme & Design
Formed in 1977, Def Leppard is a rock band from Sheffield consisting of Joe Elliot, Rick Savage, Phil Collen, Rick Allen, and Vivian Campbell. They were one of the faces of the early-1980s new wave British heavy metal movement, and their greatest commercial success came in this period. The music video for one of their most popular tracks ever, Bringin’ On the Heartbreak, was one of the first rock videos to appear on MTV’s airwaves in 1982, even though it failed to chart in the US. Hysteria, which is the theme of this slot, is the fourth studio album by Def Leppard and their most successful one to date. Likely, most people know of Def Leppard as the band with the one-armed drummer. Rick Allen, Def Leppard’s drummer, came up with this title after his 1984 car accident that led to his arm getting amputated. Hysteria, at 62 minutes long, is the lengthiest Leppard record ever.
The visual feel of this game is similar to that of NetEnt’s 2016 Guns N’ Roses slot, and to our eyes, it seems like this game utilized super similar crowd animations such as that reel spinner. The setting here features a stage in the background, above which the reel grid floats. A sea of rock fanatics populate the scene before it, while the on-stage lights change depending on which game mode is in play. None of the band’s members appear in this game, but their music gets heavily utilized. Overall, the presentation here is decent, but it is nothing jaw-droppingly beautiful or unique. It is about what you would expect from Play’n Go.
Def Leppard Hysteria uses the company’s standard button configuration with colors matched to fit this spinner’s overall blue and yellow palette. You can set your bet size in the middle of this panel, and you can find the spin and auto-spin functions on its right side.
Specs & Gameplay
Def Leppard Hysteria is a five-reel, seven-row slot that utilizes the cluster pays system to form winning combos. The bet sizes here go as low as $0.1 and as high as $100. The default RTP of this slot is 94.27%, but it can go up to 96.27%. On the other hand, it can also drop to 84.28%. The variance setting of this game is medium, and its max win potential is x10,000 your stake.
The low-paying symbols of this game are the card suits utilized in the standard French 52-card deck. These are spades, clubs, hearts, and diamonds. Plus, a star. These pay wins of x20 for clusters of fifteen or more, and the star generates prizes of x30 for the same number of matching symbol clusters. The high-paying tokens of this game are a rocket, a guitar, a leopard, and the Hysteria album logo. For clusters of more than fifteen, such token combos frом this batch pay wins of x80 to x1,000.
The Wild in Def Leppard Hysteria is a yellow W, substituting all other symbols.
Bonus Features
Def Leppard Hysteria utilizes the cascading win mechanism. That means that symbols that are a part of winning clusters explode, allowing for new ones to fall in their place. That opens up new opportunities for wins.
At any non-winning or random spin in this game, the Break It Up feature may activate, and it moves existing symbols into a new position while adding three to six Wilds onto the reel grid. The Fire Me Up mode selects a paying symbol at random, and when it is a part of winning combos, it charges the meter next to the grid. When this meter gets filled via four selected symbols, three to six Wilds will get thrown onto the grid.
Pour Some Sugar on Me is by far the most known song of the Hysteria album, with many considering it the band’s signature tune. Hence, it stands to reason that Play’n Go would seek to use it somehow. In this slot, it is the name of the Free Spins bonus. One position, on every reel, on every spin in the base game of this slot gets highlighted with yellow. When you form a winning combo with a symbol in this position, it lights up a letter at the edge of the stage. If you manage to light the five letters, you will win a complimentary reel rotation by spelling out Sugar. The bonus spin starts with the game randomly placing four to seven multiplier Wilds on the grid, beginning with x1. After each winning cascade, these dropping Wilds destroy one symbol below and cascade into that space, growing their associated multiplier by x1 each time this occurs, up to a maximum of x7.
Note that on any non-winning free spin, six to nine symbols can get randomly chosen and transformed into the symbols selected, charging the meter right of the reel grid.
GOSU Verdict
Def Leppard Hysteria is Okay. It feels a bit generic, despite offering multiple bonus features. Still, even though it blasts music from this legendary rock band, this slot, to us, felt a bit bland. The max win cap here is terrific for a medium variance spinner, and if you can find this title in its 96.27% RTP version, we would advise that you give it a go. Otherwise, there are other better rock-theme games from Play’n Go and other providers. Kiss Reels of Rock from Play’n Go is a much better choice with more personality, in our opinion.
